I use photomatrix for processing. You can give it a trial run here if you like.

When I do it, I find that taking 5 shots at 1/3 exposures seem to work best for me. If you have autobracketing on your SLR just switch it over to that, and after you transfer over to the computer just run the program, load the images into photomatrix and let the program do the work. You would like photomatrix...there's sliders to play with!!!!
I'm lazy too so I don't muck around with my HDR's too much if they don't look right coming out of Photomatrix, I cull them as I'm not one to work on something to death.
