I quite like both shots; nicely done! Good on for the extra learning.
I agree with MA here - layers and masks/selections are crucial tools to understand.
For those that don't know what this is...in a nutshell, using these tools allows you to make local adjustments (darkening, lightening, sharpening, increasing/decreasing saturation, colour balance, extractions etc.) in a very precise way.

LR3 is not working with layers and masks, or actually its working but you can't select them separately.
