This is quite nice, JJJ. Very painterly looking. Actually, it looks like a mixed media painting.
Yes - this one looks indeed like a painting. I like it. It seems, this way of treatment is your special style. Is there somewhere a little tutorial from you, so someone could try such picture treatment too?
Hi MoinMoin. Well I wish I was a computer wizz but sorry I am not! I would not know how to begin to create a tutorial but I can list a few points that will lead you in the right direction.
1 - Most of my work is created by selecting or cropping just a TINY TINY portion of the digital negative. This will create that grainy blotchy effect.
2 - When I am out shooting I try and remember to step way way back and capture at least a few images that have the main subject appear very very tiny so that when I do use suggestion No.1 and do my crop, the effect is even stronger.
3 Often I try and take fast grab shots that tend to induce shake or blur into my images. I like to create using the blur as it adds mystery to an image.
4- I love shooting with a Lensbaby lens. Check them out they are cheap and so much fun. It's easy to get creative with a Lensbaby. They can be had at reasonable prices, used, because they is a little learning curve one must go through. But many people don't have the patience to get proficient using them!
5 - I use Photoshop but the two apps I use exclusively to do all my editing are Color Efex Pro 3.0 and Silver Efex Pro. Check them out. There may be FREE trials available. You will be amazed!
6- Most of my rough borders are created using the POLARIZER filter in Color Efex Pro 3.0. Also this filter gives that faded green cast similar to a real Polaroid shot. The Silver Efex Pro app. is for editing your photos in Black & White and include Sepia and Holga and Pinhole style filters. You can combine any or all of the different effects in these two apps so the choices are unlimited!
7 - So basically I CHEAT!
I hope these few tips help or answer your questions MoinMoin. Good Luck - jimmy

Thank your jimmy for your effort to explain! The lensbaby seems a really nice toy to play with . And why not cheat, if it is making such great pictures!
You are welcome MoinMoin. The most fun lens you could have in your kit - jimmy

Thanks as always for sharing what you know JJJ
I like this shot as well, nice play. It's definitely looking like 'mixed' media to me though.
