Nice looking toad.
You did well. We have fewer and fewer with each passing year. Yours seem to be a little redder than ours which are brown and green. There once was a time when one could sit outside in the evening hours and see five or six near your feet catching insects for you, but that's no longer the case.

He let me stick my camera lens to within about 10cm (4 inches) of his face for this shot.

and you did great on that point! and that point alone is what captures the viewer. This is not the critique forum, but other marks of excellence would be reducing background distractions, maybe better cropping... that's why a great photograph is so difficult. There are several marks of excellence required in each one. Hope that helps...MarkoI knew that would be your mark of excellence and paid extra attention getting the right focus on his eye.
