    I have loads of shots of these and we get them near home as well.

    Almost all my bird shots are using flash. I consider it a definite necessity.

    Is it to "freeze" them so you can get the sharpest image or lack of light and not wanting to bump up the ISO and nasty digital noise?

    Pretty much all of the above, but also I find many birds colours show so much better when hit with flash.
