The focus is very close, in fact it looks good.
Mate ... you'll handle that 300mm handheld in time. It takes awhile to get used to it and adapt your shooting style. The way you hold the camera/lens and the way you now need to press instead of push the button will come to you. Don't rush for that tripod yet.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I'm forcing myself to just leave it on the camera and shoot exclusively with it for a while to get used to it. One thing I have noticed is that the glass is so much better than the 18-55mm kit lens I got with the camera. Now I know what my next lens needs to be
