There were two hawks, one with lunch in talon. Ghastly light to shoot in - it was dark again and they were against a layer of flat, gray clouds. Hopefully the pp isn't too horrible.

Very cool captures. Not bad at all, considering the conditions, especially second shot.
Reality is a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there!
nice captures!!

Thanks, folks. Maybe next time it will be a bit lighter.
Very good action shots. What is the prey?
that second shot is a winner!

A painter takes their vision and makes it a reality. A photographer takes reality and makes it their vision.
Thank you, Bambi and Owlp. Owlp, I can just see a short tail in both photos, especially the second one, so I'm guessing the prey is a gopher. It's a little too big to be a whistle pig. Both are all over the place right now.
I didn't actually see whatever it was caught. There was a second hawk trying to get it from the first, I think, and the second hawk was being harassed by a bird about the size of a red wing. I couldn't tell for sure that was what the bird was, but they're all over the place, too, and have a habit of dive bombing hawks.
