Here is a link to another incredible timelapse video.
Aurora Borealis timelapse HD - Tromsų 2010 on Vimeo
This is of the northern lights in Tromsų (where i currently live). This video was also featured in NASA's astronomical picture of the day november 24th.
This video is the best video of the aurora that i have ever seen.

Er ... it is when photographers have no sense of time and let it lapse by them ....

actually, it is photography done by using a fixed (or sometimes slightly mobile) anchor point and exposing a great number of frames with a bit of time "lapsing" between frames. After the images are taken, they then are assembled into a movie of sorts. So if you were to go out into a field, for example, and you pluck your tripod in the middle of it, then set your view on the sky, and do not move the camera, but do a continuous shoot from that vantage point, lets say every 30 seconds or every minute one frame, then you would get about 120/60 frames per hour. Since you did not move, but the earth is turning, once you assemble the images into a movie you would then get the illusion of actual movement.

So bring lots of coffee, and ask Greg when he is going out to do his next one ...

when the (irri) international rice research institute, funded by the ford foundation was set up here, they did time lapse photography that took months to finish, using bolex 16mm cameras, it took them months because their subject was their experiments in rice production, from seedlings to mature rice stalks, ready for harvest. the shot included the entire rice field.
