Pho­tog­ra­phy pod­cast #42 is based on a post by our‚pho­tog­ra­phy forum‚mem­ber tegan, called Photo Con­tests: Pho­tog­ra­phers LOSE. This short pod­cast expands on that post and dis­cusses how pho­tog­ra­phers need to be aware of the rights that they are giv­ing away by join­ing photo con­tests, forums, social net­work­ing sites like Face­book etc.

    Thanks for another infor­ma­tive show. I have never really been a con­test con­tributer, but this show serves as an impor­tant reminder to be aware of every­thing you do — espe­cially with your photos.

    Great pod­cast, I just recently came across it brows­ing the pod­cast direc­tory in iTunes. I am glad you talked about this issue. I believe this is one of the biggest prob­lems in world of pho­tog­ra­phy. There are many peo­ple with point & shoots, entry level DSLRžs or even the pro Nikon D3 type cam­eras that just want to see their pho­tographs pub­lished, fea­tured in an arti­cle, or what­ever. But what they donžt real­ize is that, they are hurt­ing the indus­try. Make these mag­a­zines and pub­li­ca­tion houses pay for your work, they make money on adver­tis­ing (using your photo), they make money on sales and you as a pho­tog­ra­pher should be mak­ing money for your work and your pho­tos; even if youžre using point & shoot. But the prob­lem is, why they would pay landscape/cityscape pho­tog­ra­pher to take pic­tures of Boston for exam­ple, when they can run a con­test or …œsee your photo pub­lished‚ and receive images for free.

    No won­der, pho­tog­ra­phy is an aver­age of $25k a year job; I was mak­ing almost that work­ing as a gas sta­tion clerk in my high school/college days. I believe, it should be our duty and respon­si­bil­ity to get the word out there and stop peo­ple for con­tribut­ing to such con­tests, and com­mu­ni­ties like face­book, myspace, etc.

    Itžs just amaz­ing how peo­ple think that win­ning a con­test or get­ting a photo pub­lished will make them pop­u­lar. Do some research on this topic, and see how many peo­ple actu­ally suc­ceeded. Not many, and then do some research on income/ expenses on some of these com­pa­nies tak­ing your pho­tos. You will see income grow, and expense on pho­tog­ra­phy decline. Research, how many pho­tog­ra­phers they have let go, or con­tracted over the last year com­pared to the pre­vi­ous years.
