Photography podcast #5 is ready for downloading or subscribing. In this podcast we discuss the merits of both cameras and why I chose 1 over the other. Thanks to Dominic Fuizzotto for helping me with these tests. You can read seriously technical comparisons of these and other cameras‚at dpreview.com. The images below are from my test. I tried to be as consistent as possible. Note that there are some proportion differences but that is attributable to the fact that the Canon is an 8.2 mega pixel camera and the Nikon is a 10.2 mega pixel camera. These eyes in these images were cropped from the original ‘raw’ images at 100% magnification. They were saved as jpegs at 90% quality, the ISO was 800. At lower ISOs there was no difference.

Thank you so much for the info. My Dad said for my birthday he’d buy me an DSLR. And I’ve been trying to figure out D80 or 30D. At first I thought the 30D but than I heard so much that was good about Nikon. But now I know it’s the 30D all the way! Cheers.
I agree, I have both a D70 and 30D. The Canon is a far better Camera. I haven’t touched my Nikon in months. Canon wins Hands down. Also my Dad, who is a big Nikon guy with a D200. has also moved to a Canon 5D,
Great karl! Congrats on that purchase.
I still LOVE my 30D. I picked up a Canon (NON IS) 70-200mm F4 zoom and that is a great lens as well.
I ended up following your recommendation and went with the 30D. I absolutely love it!
It worked really well with the lens that came with the kit but I have now upgraded to the Canon 17-85mm with IS and USM. This IS feature made a significant improvement when a tripod is not readily available!
Hey Karl — Thanks for the comment! I think I ended up purchasing it at Photo services on Notre Dame in Old Mtl. http://www.photoservice.ca/ENGLISH/index.asp
Can you please let me know where you ended up buying your camera? Did you buy it on the web or through a local store in MTL? Cheers
Great podcast by the way!
It’s obvious that the Nikon shot was taken out of focus…the catch lights are soft. Make a fair test at more than 800 ISO . For the record I shoot with Nikon and Canon. High ISO is the weakness for the D80 I would bet, but try to sharpen a 400iso Canon shot.…good luck.
Thanks for those comments Becky and Mike! — I am LOVING the 30D! It was the best purchase for my needs at the time. It is my first good digital camera. I should say that I did purchase the Tamron SP AF28-75mm F2.8 XRDi for the 30D and I’m loving that lens as well. Next on the wish list — a wide angled lens…perhaps the 10mm-20mm lens by Sigma. Time to start saving the pennies..again.
Wow, i love to see this. I just purchased a Canon EOS 30D, and was comparing it to the Nikon 80D.
Nikon 30D with EFS-IS 17–85
Yeah!! The Canon won! Glad to see you picked this camera as it will be my next choice when I squirrel away enough money
So, I’m wondering if you’ve bought any lenses yet? And if so what and if not what you plan on getting?
Looking forward to 2 weeks,
