Photography podcast #76 talks about point and shoot cameras and reviews the Canon G11. We talk about the advantages and limitations of point and shoot cameras. We also talk about the most important reason for photographers to get a point and shoot camera and that reason is NOT quality.‚ Finally I give a quick review of the Canon G11. I recommend this camera but I’m also brutal about its faults.

Point and shoot cameras is very good for street photography. Not all ppl like to get photograph with large DSLR. Spec i the town. A good Point and shoot cameras ppl don’t care about. Its alla about the story not the quality in picture.
Johan I could not disagree with you more though I thank you muchly for the comment.
If the story in the photo is good but the quality is bad, then perhaps it’s better than no photo at all…but you still have a bad quality photo. Quality is very very important in serious photography.
I also do not think p&s are very good for street photography…again the shutter lag.
Thanks for that Link Jack!
It’s a very interesting link. At the end of the day though, for now, these cameras still will be too noisy at high ISO sue to their small sensor size. The camera will still have a shutter lag, making it less useful to shoot anything that moves.
The hack will make the camera friendlier but it will not improve the quality.
So for now, IMO, a DSLR/SLR should be the camera of choice for excellent quality photos, and a point and shoot is for portability and good quality photos.
Hey marko, I am seriously looking into compact cameras, it is simply less hassle to carry around, if I could I would buy one of these Canon G or the Olympus Pen or the Panasonic or Sigma DP2? one, which features a bigger sensor? lovely, but cant, however i have the Canon SD900 and listening to another podcast I got to know the CDHK project

Which is basically a soft hack to Canon Point and Shoot unleashing the hidden features of these cameras. Take a look it is VERY interesting.
