Big Falls

Continuing downstream from Little Falls, things get a tad more dramatic.

The foreground is ice over rock and the water escapes through channels beneath it heading for another series of falls that were impossible for me to get to at that moment (too much ice on a very steep trail), but I'll hunt for a way down another time.

The spot where the water comes off the rock is a few feet over my head and to get the whole of the gorge requires flat lighting like above. But when the sun slices up the ravine and lights the falls, it can be magical, too. I'm glad I went on two different days (back to back as it turned out, New England, if you don't like the weather just wait 5 minutes).

And at the splashpoint in the pool, the constant movement and freezing makes for the most interesting ice formations. It's also very splashy as you can see. Only the sunlight makes them possible to photograph well, but it also makes them vanish. They were almost gone when I took the first two shots in this thread (the next day).

Anyway...I'll be going back to this spot, but in the meantime there's more to come from further downstream.

Wow I'm surprised no one has commented on these....really pretty shots of the fall (I kinda prefer the colour version here personally) and such neat ice formations.
