it was funny- for him school was something to be endured until he found his path then he took off. He went from being a 'C' student to a 92 average. :eek:

Bambi ... this is a mixed blessing, for sure, great achievement, but what would worry me to no end is the 4 years after graduation. My son volunteered for the reserves, and, as a conscienscious objector, I am wrestling with his decision. Hopefully the world will be peaceful in a short time, then we would not to have to worry about our offspring being blown away by some IED while on duty in some far away country. My heart goes out to you as a parent.

I do agree that it's a worry. But being a parent requires us to manage the worry and let them find their path. Ed and I decided that we would never try to push our kids to the careers that we wanted. We have seen how that never works out and is unfair. As a result I have on pursuing a Bach. of Fine Arts and another in the military. To be honest I am more worried about training accidents. However, my father, both uncles and grandfathers were all in the military so I have a sense of the sacrifice required. We did make sure to tell him (when he first came to us with this idea) to make sure he was pursuing this option because he wanted a military career, not for a 'free' education.

This is wonderful! Congrats! Once, many years ago, I was debating on that route. :)

It's a wonderful thing to see your little boy grow up to be a man that you can be proud of.

Not surprised. I though logarithms were just a way of adding numbers to multiply and they came in a book (Knotts or Castles) but when I returned to schooling I found they were far more useful and even in the day of the calculator still a powerful tool.

I was reading about CCD amplification and how to use Normal Distribution to work out the minimum usable light. OK I understand the general principles but no way could I use the maths.

The same goes for many of the other calculations we could do in our hobby. Amount of light entering a lens for example.

Maybe you could get him to do a simple explanation of maths used in photography?

Kidding I would not understand it if he did. However having done my degree in Electronic and Electrical engineering I know what he is letting himself into and I do wish him the best of luck.

It seems high percent of engineers are dyslexic if he is do make sure he has the help required.
