There are actually 2 possible answers for this.

Ok. The common enemy might be "rust". That would mean that this is aluminum (used to avoid rust) which might go into cars, planes, bicycles, and tripods. Aluminum can have that herringbone style pattern. Still don't have the foggiest idea what it might be.

Good guess, but aluminum is found in almost all cars today, this is not. You are very close...
