So I bought a cheap Huey monitor calibrator. I'll upload the same picture twice, once edited with calibrator, the other edited before calibration ... you tell me which one is the calibrated one ... this oughta be interesting

Just like that, I would say the one on the right is the «calibrated» one.

Hmmm ... is that what you really think or what you think after I made the comment ... hopefully all will have a look and just tell me "left" or "right"

Are these processed identically? Or not processed at all?

If processing is a variable here then I'd say I hope that the right hand side is the calibrated one because the red is much better. Also, most uncalibrated monitors tend to be set too bright which leads me to the left photos as the uncalibrated one.

MA, they were processed to what was pleasing to my eye; so both looked good to me once I was done with the conversion. I have to say, though, that I had to really punch the saturation after processing. I bought the huey, cause it was relatively cheap. It does not give any "numeric value" choices ... so I am not sure if I am going to keep it. So I cannot set the gamma, for instance. I assume it is set to 2.2, but again, that is an assumption. As far as Color temperature is concerned: I am not sure where it is at. I assume again it is fixed @ 6500K.

I think it would be difficult for us to make an accurate judgement if processing varibles are present.

Having said that, I'd say the left shot is slightly washed out and needs some contrast, and the right photo has a tad too much contrast created shadows just a bit strong but the colours look better to me.

On top to that, MA, I suppose you would only be able to tell the real difference if the monitor you are viewing on is calibrated ... so there is that variable as well.

Needless to say I look at the images on here now and they sure look different to me ... very very different. Especially mine :headslap: I printed the two images out side by side on a 8½ x 11 sheet .. and yes, there is a difference in the tonal quality, for sure. I always hated my printer, now it is not so bad ... operator error :headslap: without calibration my images did not satisfy me at all on that printer.

I calibrated my monitors only 2 days ago also :)

Sounds like you've made astep in the right direction if the printed versions are looking better although printer calibration makes a huge difference there as well.
