Hey all, i managed to take my first few shots yesterday as the weather cleared up enough after i got home from work.

Any tips/guides or ways to improve the shot both technically and in composition would be greatly appreciated!
yes.... Kiddo.... for the first little while you are going to experience a phonomenen called shootightis.... it's a blinding effect that impulses you to take pictures of anything that gets in your path.... it will make you better in the end...
for first time shooting the shot is well done and framed..... reasonably sharp and exposed.... some of the pink looks punched but not bad...
now you should be looking at elements in the picture that are distracting..... such as the plethora of dead buds occupying the center of the frame... is this is your only subject I would suggest shooting a different angle that cancels out the dead heads and draws the viewer into one of the pleasant looking living ones....
you can also experiment using aperture priority at your widest aperture setting to blur the foliage behind the subject flower..
good work.... keep shooting and posting.... you will get guidance and information here that will put you light years ahead of what you can do on your own...:)
lol, yes i have started on my drive to and from work looking at places and thinking "that might make a nice shot"... thank you for the tips will definitely experiement some more :)

travis has said it all very well - its a good shot, nice color & framing & focus, but the flower itself is not the prettiest subject.
if you have in fact been bitten by the shutterbug, this place is great for posting all kinds of images like this to get info and feedback and soon you will start asking questions to yourself before taking the pictures, thinking ahead of what comments you'll get when you post your photos up here! its a really awesome learning tool - its helped me tons! :)
Did you consider getting closer or was that impossible with the lens you were using?

I was fairly close at the time Tegan, it's a 14mm - 42mm lens that came with the camera and i was zoomed all the way in. How close should be getting, almost within touching distance of the lens?
as close as the focus limit of your lens will allow..... for shots like these you want to fill most of the frame with your subject IMO....Quote:
