My younger brother and his family (wife Mandy and 3 yr old son Dean) have embarked on a huge journey. In their Hilux 4WD, and towing a caravan, they are traveling across/around Australia.
They left a couple of weeks ago from their home (about 45 mins drive north of my location) and have covered some 1600 kms and have some stories to tell already.
They intend to travel across the country to Alice Springs in the centre and see the Rock before going up to Darwin and then across to Western Australia (WA) and traveling several 4WD routes down to the Sthn end of WA (where I was last year) and then across the bottom of the country through South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and then home once more. BIG trip!
I've created a map that I update for family and friends here to show their travels ... Graeme-Mandy-Trip-2010 ? (http://ridewithgps.com/routes/81689)
Speaking to Graeme last night on the phone I asked if he minded if I put up a post here to show his photos from the journey.
He has an old D60 (yes D60, not 60D) Canon and a single lens ... a 28-135 I think from memory. They have a laptop and Graeme and Mandy are limited in their post processing skills so the photos we'll see are all straight out of camera!
As I get time, and as they show the photos I'll keep updating this post and we can all travel around with them.

It's going to be way cool to follow them pictorially for sure. Most us never venture out there.
In a few days they will stay at the 'Walkabout Creek Hotel.' Can anyone tell me if that sounds familiar ;)

A Boab (Bottle) Tree beside the road.
Every boab tree is unique. They have character and personality as you would expect of such an ancient creature. Some individual boab trees are 1500 years old and older, which makes them the oldest living beings in Australia, and puts them amongst the oldest in the world.
Aboriginals used the giants as shelter, food and medicine. For the white settlers they served as easily recognisable land marks and meeting points, and not to forget as impromptu prison cells. - The Boab Tree - A Kimberley Icon (http://www.outback-australia-travel-secrets.com/boab_tree.html)

One of many 'Road Trains' common to these outback areas. While on the phone to Graeme one evening last week he counted 5 of these in a 20 min phonecall!
Out on the bulldust roads in Aussie outback you can see these things coming up 30 mins before they arrive. There's a cloud of dust that continually grows larger as they approach. When they are getting close ( a few minutes away still) you find somewhere to pull over out of the way and wait until they pass. These things can't stop in a hurry. They've killed you and still skidded another 500 metres before getting stopped and looking for survivors if you don't! 62 wheels can do a lot of damage! Makes the 18 wheelers seem kinda toy-like huh?

The famous 'Black Stump' at Blackall. This is a stump that was used to do some of the original surveying of outback Queensland. It is immortalized here and with sayings such as 'Beyond the Black Stump' which means WAAAAAAAAAAAY out in the middle of nowhere!!!

It should be very interesting as they go along.
A few days ago Graeme bought a genuine working stock whip that was made by an Aboriginal man. The town was a small place and the man who showed Graeme how to tie the ends so it will 'crack' when he whips it was the Chief of Police. Life in a small town.

this is great!! thanks to you and your brother for sharing these. do they have to be careful of wildlife?
Thanks Bambi.
They do have to be wary of wildlife but have had no real issues. There was that scorpion but they aren't that dangerous here in Aussie.
You don't want a roo coming your windscreen though, especially if it lives, panics, and claws you and the car to death.
Dingo's are best avoided although usually not much of an issue.
And of course there are the snakes. But if you watch for them, and give them room to move away they almost always will.
Graeme called last light all excited. Ayres Rock has been closed during their visit. This means no climbing it. This is common now due to Aboriginal pressure and they can close it for so many reasons. impending weather or some cultural reason for instance. So it hardly gets opened to climbing. Yesterday it was opened for a short amount of time and Graeme got the chance to climb it. Hours later, when he rung me, he said his chest was still sore from the effort and his legs were still jelly! The Drama's continue for Graeme and Mandy on their journey.
They are now sitting in Darwin. A week ago Graeme's Canon D60 (yes ... it's a D60 ... older Canon digital DSLR) died. He rung me a few days asking for advice on what to buy while they were in Darwin. He'd found some Canon's he could afford in a brochure for a sale on up there at present. I went through those with him and also suggested he look closer at the Nikon D5000 and D90's in the catalogue.
Not sure if he's bought one yet. He has another worry.
Graeme and Mandy have a great dog who they left behind with our sister. Buddy is an aging Kelpie and has been an awesome dog. Last week he was diagnosed with liver cancer and given a week to a month to live. They've had buddy since he was a pup.
They told young Dean and he answered as you would expect a 4 yr old to answer ... "Don't worry Daddy ... Buddy will get better soon" .... "Not this time mate" Graeme answered.
My sister put herself and Buddy on a plane the other day and flew him to Darwin so Graeme and Mandy could spend a few last days with him. Graeme mentioned during the phonecall that he should put him down very soon. I told him to simply wait until he sees Buddy ... he will know if whether he should keep him alive days or weeks when he sees him. I told him I hoped he was strong enough to make the right call for Buddy's sake.
We will miss that dog. He was a special one.

Damn, I'm sorry to hear that, MA. What a rough thing to happen during the trip. I imagine Dean is going to be heartbroken when Buddy is gone, but I hope he's able to look back when he's older and remember the good times he had with him. My sympathy to them, if you think they'd like to hear that.

I spoke to Graeme on the phone yesterday to see how things were going. He said to say thanks to Bambi and Q1 for their comments on Buddy.
Buddy is doing ok apparently. He's brightened up a bit on seeing them but sometimes looks quite ill. At one point he slumped in Graeme's arms and his eyes started flicking around and Graeme called Dean and Mandy over to say goodbye. Might just have been a small seizure or something because he rested and was ok later. Graeme says he can see Buddy wants to live and is having happy times for now so he won't put him down immediately. Literally it is 1 day at a time.
On the camera front he bought a new DSLR. After looking at both the Nikons and Canons in his price range he walked away with a Canon 50D. Virtually the same as I have for those non Canon users. The faster shutter speed and the fact he has a few old Canon accessories like a couple of lenses swayed him to stay with the brand. So ... the photos should start coming through once more soon :)

Now for the BAD news.
They may not make Western Australia. Graeme's Platelets have dropped to a count of only 128.
For those not sure what I'm on about, we've had some issues with cancer in our family over the years, as I realize, many of you will have also.
Recently my father has battled Non Hodgkins Lymphoma, Melonoma and Prostate Cancer ... all in the last couple of years or so. I've had a melonoma cut out of my neck and I'm currently trying to save enough money to have a procedure down for a lesser form of sun damage. My wife also had to have a skin cancer cut from her neck.
Graeme, at age 11, was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma and was classed terminal. This form of cancer is aggressive and also very rare in children. We were told to prepare for his death. Positive thinking and support, along with a good medical team saw him go into remission against the odds thankfully.
Later, in his 30's, which was only a few short years back, Graeme was diagnosed with Non Hodgkins Lymphoma, another rarity as it's highly unusual for someone to get both types (very different) of lymphoma. This time, instead of being aggressive the cancer was indolent, which means basically dormant or very slow progressing.
Graeme is trying to live life to it's fullest and spend as much time as he can with his wife and boy in case this time round he doesn't beat it. His body has seen many of the drugs used against lymphoma so that makes it harder to fight each time. However, drugs have improved and changed somewhat since he was eleven so that may in his favour, as is his age, mid 30's.
So ... platelets. Platelet are basically the element in your blood that causes clotting. An average adult has a count of around 200 - 400 x10 to the power of 9, per litre. We just drop the x10 stuff and just talk in the numbers easier to understand. So instead of having between 200 - 400 ... he is down to 128 at the last check last week. At 100 he needs to get back to where he can be treated properly.
Under 100 and the chances of internal bleeding and such complications are too prevalent.
A drop in platelets can be caused by other factors but are used as a reliable indicator for the onset of his disease.
Not happy news, and it's not over yet, but we may not see the end of this wonderful journey. This young family and those of us who love him may have to embark on another, one we've been on before and would rather not repeat.

first of all I am loving the pictures. the Devil's marble are amazing! I have no words for the wall of bras :laughing:

Thanks Odyssey and Bambi. Seems like an ongoing battle for our family one way or another. We are yet to lose an immediate family member though so we must be grateful for that.
It's amazing country out there huh? I'm waking up to anything from 4 - 12 degrees C here and getting as high as 25 degrees. Graeme and co are waking to 22 degrees and anything to 35 C. That's winter in the outback and tropics where they are.

I just spent an hour on the phone with both Graeme and Mandy. Got some more accurate info on Graeme's condition at least.
As I've mentioned in the past, his Lymphoma is indolent, slow progress.
The average Platelet count for an adult is actually anywhere between about 160 - 180 through to around 400.
Graeme's test 2 weeks ago was 132 ... then a week ago 128. Stress and flu's etc can all cause a drop in platelets. With Buddy dying and a recent cold Graeme has had both of these possibilities so it's hopefully that at this point his recent count is not an indicator that his cancer has begun to progress. It expected that when it does, it will be aggressive and quick.
For the time being, it's business as usual!
After those last lot of photos, they have traveled from Darwin through the Kakadu National Park where there were so many Crocodiles they weren't able to enjoy too many sights with Dean in tow. Dean is so fast and hyper that he would be a croc's breakfast in the blink of an eye. A large wild Boar was menacing people in the area a few days back and ended up a croc's dinner here.
They've moved back down to the town of Katherine, famous for the Katherine Gorge, and soon will begin the journey westwards towards Western Australia.
This map shows the area they are in ...

That's semi-good news about his platelet count, MA. I told Mike about your post this morning. He sat down today and looked through the entire thread. Like me, he thinks the photos and the trip are fantastic. We're both sending good wishes your brother's way.

Wow, this thread is such a mirror of life - the highs, the lows, the beauty of nature, people's off the wall antics and everything in-between. Best wishes for your brother MA and thanks for sharing.

I am sorry to hear the unfortunate news with your brother. I hope that all turns out well for him and his family, as I am sure it will. He, (and his wife and child), seem like such a wonderful family, and I am so glad that they are sharing this adventure with us.
This has to be the cheapest trip that we have ever taken. My husband and I look forward to these posts, and seeing the sights, and culture in your country. I am sure there is so much more to see there, but this has to be the most interesting story I have heard, (watched), unravel in such a time. It is truly amazing that they are able to do this, and I know that they will ever forget this adventure that most of us envy so much.
Please thank them again for such an opportunity to see Australia as we have never seen it before, and tell them our hearts are with them, and they are in our prayers.

Wonderful shots! I find the rock art interesting, given my recent discovery of the petroglyphs locally. Yours are quite a bit more elaborate. The one roo/wallaby looks like he should be holding a beer while belching. The sunsets, the wildlife, the woman working on the basket, all wonderful. And leave it to a kid to find a way of playing with the most ordinary things.

I'm sure there will be more to come but they are in sparse internet country!
The Gibb River track took it's toll with several welds breaking on the Hilux and caravan but it also shook the fuel tank apart as well. They managed to limp out of the Gibb River track into civilization after a few days with Diesel leaking.
Last I heard they were about 160 km's south of Broome on the Western Australian coastline.
Graeme had a Platelet count done and his levels have dropped to 114 which is a concern for his cancer. He should be above 150 or more. This, by itself is not saying his cancer is hitting at last, it's just an indicator and needs other factors confirmed yet. He's pushing on but getting tests. He does need to be very careful of cutting and bruising as a count that low means little in the way of blood clotting.

I have a question- in terms of the swimming holes, how do you know which ones are safe (predator free)?

They are certainly seeing a wild side of the country JAS.
I'm glad you are enjoying the holiday MM :)
I have a question- in terms of the swimming holes, how do you know which ones are safe (predator free)?
Easy ... you hang your dog, child or someone you don't like much over the water for 5 mins. If nothing jumps out and eats it you're good for a swim!
Or ... you could just avoid ALL saltwater and brackish waterways along the whole top third of the country and obey the signs that say 'No Swimming Trespassers will be Eaten' etc.
Usually, freshwater is safe unless there's a snake having a dip in it, but that's rare ... although I had a Brown Snake swim past me once in a creek near Brisbane. However, if the freshwater waterway is still near a saltwater waterway I'd still be wary.
Tourist Info, signs and local knowledge are the safest bets out there.

I do quite a bit of snorkeling in Mexico and I must say it's nice to see a clean reef. I've had the opportunity a couple of times and they can be spectacular. The photos from the underwater disposable cameras don't do them justice and the housings for the point and shoots aren't a whole lot better. You really have to see it for yourself so if you get the opportunity, take it.

Not sure if I mentioned the latest issues but at this point the old Toyota Hilux was starting to struggle again. You'll remember the bent chassis that had to be welded, and the tape holding the lights in because the corrugations had shaken out the screws. Then the fuel tank split it's seams because the roads were so rough.
Somewhere around this point of their journey there was a huge crunch as Graeme went for 5th gear and suddenly the Hilux was a 4 speed! Luckily 5th is on a separate shaft so the gearbox still operates without it. A few drainings of the oil to remove the metal bits and it was onwards towards Perth in South Western Australia.
Before then though the Shark bay region of Western Australia needed a visit ...

That's it for now for the photos.
I will tell you that they travelled down the coast, stayed a week with a mate of ours in Bunbury Western Australia where it was raining most of the time so now photos from there apparently. You can see the that region of Western Australia in my thread http://www.photography.ca/Forums/f11/fly-me-across-australia-3809.html
In this region they discovered that the Hilux had now blown a head gasket but wasn't putting oil into the water thankfully. Also the turbo was over-spooling so Graeme had to adjust the waste-gate to ease that issue as best he could.
So began the sneak back home to surprise everyone. I called them 2 days ago and they were in Broken Hill, NSW and wondering what their best route was to get their sick Hilux towing a caravan over the Great Dividing Range and down to the coast near Brisbane.
As luck would have it I'd driven the area last weekend! Our other brother had already the Cunningham Gap and I was able to confidently confirm it was the best option and suggest the flattest, quickest route to the coastal highway into Brisbane as well.
Around 3pm yesterday they rolled back into their own home back on the Sunshine Coast ... glad to be home and very sad the journey was over.
I suspect more photos are to come of the journey between Shark bay and Perth ...and then again a few snaps along the journey home as well.
Will post those when they get to putting them up.

Graeme used to be a very good photographer, doing weddings and some commercial work as well. Then he sorter fell out of it I guess. This trip has seen him pick up the old camera and slowly rub the rust off his skills ... until the camera broke. So, from about the halfway mark, he was learning to use the new 50D he bought. In the process, Mandy also took a much deeper interest in photography than before and many of these shots are hers. She has learnt quickly from Graeme's skills and several of her shots have impressed me greatly.
Those wildflowers are beautiful aren't they!!
Healthwise, well ... I just spent a few hours with Graeme and his lymph-nodes in his neck are NOT looking good. However, he's just driven right across the country in a few days (equal to driving from LA ... to New York ... via Texas) in a 4WD with serious problems towing the caravan. Which, by the way, lost the door on the way home :) They had to turn around and drive 35 k's to find it again! So ... here's hoping that the stress of all that etc has contributed to running him down a bit and he'll be fine again after a few days rest. Will keep you posted as I know.
How about those dolphins hey gang? How cool is it they swim right up to you?
Graeme said the shark in that photo is a Lemon shark and that area is a breeding ground for them. Not a shark I'd like to go swimming with.

Graeme's Lymphoma is no longer indolent and after just a few more tests it will be time to start treatment again very shortly. You may remember that this is his 2nd belt with Lymphoma so it's expected to be a tough battle.

Unfortunately the test/biopsy results aren't good. The cancer is in his bone marrow :(
The short of it is that if he survives the treatment they will start as soon as possible (maybe even this side of Christmas) it will be a long 6 months, and then after that, his prognosis is living 5 - 10 years maximum. He now needs a lot of luck or some medical breakthrough if he is to live even to my age now.
Looks like yet another Christmas with cancer dominating the preceedings.
You'd think I'd be used to this after Graeme having cancer when he was younger, myself, my wife, and more recently my father 3 times in a two year period (he's still under some post cancer treatment), but it's hard to know what to do or say to him and Mandy. All I could think of was saying "I didn't know what I could offer but if they thought of anything at all, all they need do is ask." Doesn't seem enough. We've also offered to babysit Dean as the treatments will be down here in Brisbane. We will also set up a bedroom for them in case they need to stay a night at any time.
Anyhow enough rambling ... thanks for listening ...

Oh Steve I am so sorry to hear this. I can imagine how devastated everyone must be. It's wonderful that you are able to set up a bedroom and be a support for them as they go through this. Your ongoing support will be of huge value to them.
I have no idea what a person in Canada can do but let me know :). At the very least I will be thinking of them and hoping that they can grab a few more precious moments in the time that they have left together.
hugs to you and your family! :grouphug:

Very sad news indeed. From everything I have seen and learned of Graeme and his family from this trip they have taken us on, he is one of a kind for sure. I am so glad he was able to do this trip for his closest loved ones, and even more so that he shared so much of what so many of us will never have the opportunity to see, or do. It was so wonderful that they got to do this amazing once in a lifetime adventure together. Most ordinary people would never even attempt what they did together, and for that they can be amazingly proud of themselves and I know the family will never forget this ever, and it shows how extraordinary this man really is.
I know myself, and my family with whom I have shared this adventure, will never forget it, and for that I thank them all, including yourself.
You still never know MA. Amazing unexplained things happen everyday, and with a man as strong willed as Graeme, you just never know what the future will bring. Here's hoping for the best in their future together. I know with persons such as yourself in their corner, there is an even better chance of coming out of this alright yet.
They, (and the rest of your family), are in our thoughts and prayers daily, and please be sure to pass this message along to all.

Unfortunately the test/biopsy results aren't good. The cancer is in his bone marrow :(

Ramble some more if it helps. I'm sorry to hear the news, and I'll hope for that luck and breakthrough for him. I wish there was something more I could do to help - I imagine everyone does. Please, keep us posted. And if there's anything I might be able to do, ask. I'll try.

For those following this ... I thought I'd mention that today Graeme had his first treatment. Mabthera. He had an allergic reaction to it so they had to restart at a slower rate. This meant there was not enough time to also give him the Chemo which was to follow so that will happen tomorrow now.

Thanks for posting and keeping us in the know MA.
We are all pulling for him and the rest of the family. He must be a tough bugger for sure, after what he has just done, so that will help tremendously too.

He is still recovering. Vomited the following morning so the anti-nausea drugs dosage isn't right. He's also getting a host of tablets between treatments and some of those give him bone pain. It's going to be a very long 6 months for him it seems.

When we went camping in Algonquin Park when I was a kid we had baths in a plastic washbasin also. Thanks for the photos.
