I saw this in my RSS feed the other day. I really don't see it unless it's that big semi-circular brown patch. If that's the dam then I would never have recognized it as a beaver dam from that image. I expect to see a river or lake or something and the dam being in it.

It is the biggest dam in the world and the largest structure made by animals in nature. The fact that you can see it from space is pretty impressive even if only a dot. There are some enterprising beavers in Canada. Oh, by the way scientists have known of its existence for a couple of years.

Damned (no pun intended) if I can see it in that satellite photo either. I think they are stretching it a bit somehow. Maybe a higher res version shows something more?

The news said it was the whole brown area, not just under the arrow.

But there doesn't appear to be a river or stream evident there?

I just found this image to illustrate it better perhaps?

I don't think that beavers have the highest IO ;)

The canadian beaver ( is there any other kind???) is an industrious animal. I get a kick out of watching them. That being said, one has to wonder what people were thinking when they introduced them to other parts of the world. Tierra del fuego is in ruins now due to the beaver being introduced there. They have even swam across open sea and reached mainland south america where they have climbed mounatins to block the flow of water:laughing:
