View Full Version : Abstract again

This is yet another abstract shot and I'm curious to know what people think.
I am a huge advocate that in general photos should tell or suggest stories.
However - shots like this defy that statement IMO and yet I do believe that there is plenty of room for abstract images when they are well done.
Honest critiques as always - many thanks!

Even in abstracts, there should still be a centre of interest and the viewer's eye should still be drawn to a certain part of the abstract. The abstract should also have a "natural" look despite any filtering or postprocessing.
In this case, the blue at the front, looks way too artificial, added, and phony.
It just does not work. :) :)

Interesting - aside from bumping up the levels and playing a wee bit on the 'vibrancy' nothing was added. Pure reflection off the water.
In terms of that center of interest....normally I would 100% agree.
I feel abstracts could break that rule however (maybe not this one though). Take a Jackson Pollack painting for example which I'm attaching. No single central area of focus here and yet for me this painting still works. Borrowing from that same principle aren't there patterns that can be photographed that also have no clear cental focal point - or MULTIPLE points of interest.
Opinions?
Thx

The "asterisk" becomes the centre of interest with the line pointing to it and the fact that "text" abstract or otherwise is generally read from left to right.

Unfortunately the lack of detail in the blue of your shot makes it look painted rather than part of a photo.

More than just the blue... I guess what struck me is that there was a bit of a plastic-y look in the blue that looks almost overly sharpened while in other areas it seems as though there's a whole lot of noise. I like abstract work on the whole, but this shot really just isn't working for me

For me the first pic is just a color clash, maybe the wrong time of day? Red and green together doesn't work in this one and to add that mid day blue. Maybe I'm off base but I think it's a color problem.
