Just looking closer. No it doesn't work really. The narrow DOF gives away that this is a miniture and taken close up. No way at zoom would the parked cars be out of focus. The focus goes out too quickly behind the buildings as well.

I think you'd get a better result by shooting wider, with more DOF and then selectively blurring to create a more realistic DOF to mimic what would realy happen. If you go take a similar photo for real you'll see what I mean.

This is a miniature? It's quality is quite amazing at this resolution. Especially the person walking on the sidewalk.

I agree that the DOF feels doesn't seem right though.

Isn't this a fake tilt/shift and therefore a pic of real sized stuff that now looks like a miniature?

Either way the DOF is not quite right, but pretty close and would pass casual scrutiny.

Oh ok ... so it's NOT a real miniture? Ok ... had me fooled. Still don't like the DOF though and the way it's way blurred where it should be sharp.

Yeah, it seems like you either want all the cars in focus, or otherwise, perhaps to blur them all.

Well easy enough to tell its real, just look at the patch job on small greenish GM pickup and the dirt on the cars just all over like with real cars, the amount, the splatter pattern, etc, and then many other things that make you know it is real. It appears he was laying down or close to it and took the shot and that will make those cars look out of focus because he is close the the ground and the sudden steep grade will throw the focus out of whack if he had been up taller I think much more would have been in focus. It is just a guess, I cannot figure out why the focus is so out of whack unless he was laying or sitting or he did the softening of the focus in PS or similar program. Just looks off, the rest of it I think is neat.

So Iggy inquiring minds want to know why and how you did the soft focus and was it accidental or on purpose?

It's just a photoshop trick to make it look like a tilt shift photo to make a real scene look like a toy town. It does look rather cool though. It's kind of a popular thing on flickr lately with even a free application available that will do it for you. I guess the fact that everyone is having trouble figuring it out means it does work. If you do not scrutinize too carefully it does look like a town of model cars and tiny buildings.

This was actually taken from the top of Citadel Hill in Halifax and is a full size real city. The processing was done in Gimp. I duplicated the image in a second layer. One layer was blurred quite a bit and I used an unsharp mask on the other layer. I created a layer mask and tried to expose sharpness at a specific distance which gets you that miniature look. I found it tricky to figure out the right distance for this shot because of the angle. Apparently, by everyone's reaction, it's pretty close ;)
