Hi Marko,
Is there anyway we can start up a thread to give suggestions on places to photograph in specic areas that a member has found or a member might be going to on vacation?
I mean I have a few great places to go in Calgary and if anybody asks I would more than be happy to tell them and I discovered some neat places while tripping around in Banff a month ago. Marko, when you went to Niagara falls I remember you posted a thread where you had asked if anybody had good tips for shooting in the area. I've seen others on here ask the same question (AL had one a while back about abandoned places in Ontario http://www.photography.ca/Forums/f15/cornwall-ont-info-6890.html) and wouldn't it be great if we had a section where we could do that to help others. Maybe post pictures also of our takes on what we saw based on suggestions.
I keep going back to an idea by Tomorrow's treasures found here:
http://www.photography.ca/Forums/f3/members-guide-book-6682.html
and I posted a similar tip here:
http://www.photography.ca/Forums/f3/wanna-catch-some-eagles-calgary-6730.html

Thanks for anything you could do here..might be alot of fun and really helpful to have it all in a section. :)

I like this idea. It could showcase some travel photos and if someone is going somewhere they could post it and ask for suggestions.

For example, I'll be travelling to Austin, Tx in May and would love to have some ideas of where to go and take pictures :)

I like this Idea as Well - I see no reason not to try:highfive:
Let's just just think about organizing for a sec.
Maybe just one new forum for cities to start?
Then we can scale up as needed - or feel free to suggest anything that may help.
What about thread titles? Should be the name of the city first for easy searching?

anything else come to mind?

Thx- marko

What about a Photo.Ca google map like the one some of us have marked where we live. I presume people will also be more willing to mark this map than where they live.

I'd like the google map idea. I'm not really familiar with Canadian geography, so I can get an idea how different parts of your country look like. :)

I'm not familiar with the Google Maps....is there any way we can tie in information to the map? Ive used Google earth...is it similar?
I also like the idea of adding the city name as the title to make it easier to find/reference...and a link to the Google map.
So if someone was coming to Calgary, how would we do this...google map first and then add a question and or cool tip they found?
I am hoping we can keep it easy for both the members to use and for Marko to set up.:)

The first thing that I thought of when I started reading this thread was a Google map. You can mark spots on a map, include an iconic photo of the location plus add some descriptive text. Seems like the perfect solution to me. I don't think it is that complicated though it means you need a Google account to fully participate.

I've created a sample for us to try and see if it's worth doing...

Halifax Area Photography - Google Maps (http://maps.google.ca/maps/ms?source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&ie=UTF8&t=h&msa=0&msid=110894644208309609901.000481fda4bcc6270f178&ll=44.652917,-63.572688&spn=0.009037,0.01929&z=16)

This sounds very cool. I haven't traveled in CA much, but extensively in the US and can contribute stuff stateside. Nice idea Casil (or is it LisaC?).

okay but how would it work? Can I add photos to Iggy's map? Or am I over thinking it?

I like the idea of the city/place being the title. it would it much easier to search.

Nice idea Casil (or is it LisaC?).
LoL it's both actually...the 403 is my area code also. :)
And thanks....I think it would be a really cool thing to start but credit goes to Tomorrow's Treasures for the original idea...I saw the ball and decided to run with it. :highfive:

I like the google maps idea - but I'd like to integrate it with the forum through posts. That way people can write stuff and it's easy to find...and if it's not people can ask questions and the OP can clarify....

Maybe we could start a new forum, each post starts with a city name. If that
city comes up again, then the new post should go in that city's thread.
We can link to the google map in every post.

I can also hunt to see if there are hacks that can integrate map(s) directly with posts.

what do yall think - any other ideas?

thx - M

well what about posting the photo and then providing the link for the google map?

Marko

yup that's the suggestion - post the picture and text and link to the google map.

I think it is a good idea not to sure how you would go about doing it though. I asked about Cornwall once and was given a fabulous link to stuff in the area. I ended up in Montreal so it did not help that time but I will have it next time I am out that way. I think it should be like what I did, I am going to point a, is there anything in the area of point a and I am taking route XX to get there is there anything I should be on the lookout for or any off route interests I may want to look into. I think rather than a forum just when people plan to travel ask in the Off Topic Area or General Photography. Have been here now a long time and rarely are there questions about traveling or what one might find in an area. So I would suggest people when they do plan to travel post where and when you are going and if someone who has been or is from the area can offer up ideas.

No rush Marko. We're patient people (well, at least I am). It'd be cool, but we don't need it right now. Take your time. I'd hate to stress you out... ;)

I see your point A.L. but I think I'd like to try this in its own dedicated forum.

If it doesn't work (meaning few posts) I'll simply delete that forum and move the posts to OFF topic or something.... Maybe the existence of the forum will encourage people to post more travel spots

I know that I'll sometimes PLAN new travel according to a good photography spot...:twocents:

Hi members,

It's live here Education & Technical - Photography locations by city at photography.ca/Forums (http://www.photography.ca/Forums/f32/)

I only added 1 spot so far....but if members want to post a few old thread addressed that could also be added - that would be great.

Please post the thread addresses in THIS thread and I'll move them.

Please continue to give suggestions if you think of any.

and of course if you have new spots just feel free to add them directly.

Thx!

I made a post in the thread and put the link there...feel free to edit as you like.

Hi everyone!

I've added this forum but it looks fairly empty......I'm fairly easygoing but my one forum pet peeve.....is that I hate empty forums...

If after about a month there are less than a dozen entries or so....I'm going to delete this forum and merge the posts elsewhere. I'll tag them with some tag so that they can still be located quickly...but the forum itself will be deleted... kind of like the buy/sell forum. It just didn't get enough action.

That said, if i do delete the forum and in the future we want to reactivate it...it will take me 5 seconds to reactivate.

Thx all!

Marko
