This Kreesha Turner who put on just a stunning show at NXNE. I was the only one on this side of the stage and she held the note until I was able to get a few shots off. It has been a while since I shot live music and forgot how difficult it is, the night performances were much harder than I recall. I ended with some just stunning photos from the past week.

Thank you very much, very nice comments, I was maybe 12-15 feet away (Very rough guesstimate). She was also very photogenic which worked in my favour. The backup singers were just as photogenic which gave me lots of photos from her show. I had a media pass so I had access to wherever I wanted to go as long as I didn't interfere with the show.

I have over 200 photos of her and her back up group, so yes I am fairly sure I have one with her eyes open. Why?

Basic is that the eyes are the centre of interest in any portrait. :)

It is first not a portrait, it is a shot of a live performance, secondly if her eyes were open as she was singing it would look like either she was stunned or yawning. It would look horrid and be very unnatural.

do you have any other shots you could post of something similar, with her eyes shut (which makes it more obvious that she is in fact singing, and not stunned - lol) with more of her surroundings in the shot? to show off more of the live performance?

you seem to have some really great access to some very interesting photo opps! do you do this for fun (of course its for fun, who am i kidding?), or for a living? do you have a bunch of connections, or how do you get the media passes? im sure they dont just let anybody have them...

I do it for fun and during the fun it has taken a life of its own. Word seems to have gotten around about my work and I have been able to get passes and access to places I could only have dreamed of lol. I will be posting more on my website after I am done with a magazine I am in talks with who are buying some of them, they were the ones who got me the media pass. This particular photo Ms.Turner has asked for a copy of in exchange she will autograph a copy for me, it is one I am keeping for myself why I posted it. I think I have horseshoes up the derriere lmao. If you want to see more later let me know and I can pm you my web address. It will be a week or two until all the i's are dotted and t's crossed and the cheque cashed lol so until then this is one of the few photos I am posting from the event.

Portrait: "A likeness of an individual, especially the face." (Britannica Dictionary) What the person is doing is irrelevant to the category of photograph.

I'm perfectly okay with her eyes being closed I just also wanted to see what she looked like with open eyes.

Why I asked why lol, my previous comment was for Tegan. You hadn't answered so I assumed I was not talking to you lol.

And Tegan, OK it is a Portrait if it makes you happy. Whatever.

common tegan...... you've seen many shots of musicians captured with there eyes close in order to show their spiritual connection with the musc....

when i was a young pot smoking kid i had posters of bob marley, jimi hendrix, stevie ray vaughn, ravi shankar... all captured with their eyes closed...

if the picture is taken 90 degrees when the artist is facing the crowd then it would be a better argument for eyes open...

Yes, Travis, but I have also seen singers in the same position with their eyes wide open in more effective shots and hey, I am not being an egomaniac either just repeating criticism that I have received from some of my event shots in the far past and I learned that it was valid.

seriously?

This shot is fine and would not convey the same emotion if her eyes were open. I do agree that she would actually look odd, you try opening your mouth as if you were singing like that then open your eyes and look in the mirror.
I personally can not recall a time seeing a singer belting out a physically demanding note where there eyes are not at least severely squinted and face contorted.
Also you can pull out all the dictionary quotes you want this is not a portrait,
according to your post what the person is doing is irrelevant a picture of a football player diving for a touchdown would be a portrait. When I want to learn how to take a picture of a football player scoring a touchdown I don't go out and buy a how to take portraits book.
The only thing your argument serves is the argument.
