From where to buy and which one

Hi everyone. I am new (in every sense... forum,photography,english speaking environment.. :) ). I would like to buy a DSLR but my budget only allows me to buy a Nikon D40 body+18-55mm as far as I am concerned. I have looked through only BestBuy/FutureShop. that is all I know right now. So I was hoping you could tell me

1) Is there any designated/cheaper camera shop in toronto? [I don't like to buy from internet..]
2) Is there any other model available around this price?
3) What else is necessary as starter kits like . memory cards, batteries, filters ? [I saw a Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di LD AF in a magazine that is cheap. is it any good + available ? ]

I would appreciate as much suggestions as possible.. Thank you.

The cheapest place to buy good quality cameras in Toronto is Downtown Camera which is not very far from Henry's location wise and is a hundred dollars or more, cheaper per item.

The D40 kit is a GREAT dslr starter kit. If you have a little extra money I would recommend upgrading the 18-55 to the second edition 18-55VR(vibration reduction) lens. I think it's only $50 more.

I shoot Nikon so I'm not aware of Canon equiv but someone else here could help you with that.

As far as other stuff you should grab at least 2 x 2gig SD memory cards, an entry level tripod, a UV filter, a polarizing filter...... if you get hooked... SB400 flash..

I went to buy a roll of 4"x26' paper at Downtown Camera and they were $8.00 a roll more expensive then Vistek and Vistek is expensive. I also priced out a few other Lenses at Downtown Camera and I personally found them the same as Henry's main store and at times the same price as Vistek. You should try Adens on Yonge St. just north of Dundas St. on the west side. Henry's if you want to, go to the Warehouse which is just west of Church. It is not the main store but again just to the West of Church St. and the Henry's regular store and on the South side as well.

I have got some really good deals from there and Adens is usually less expensive than anyone else. So basically check out all of them, Downtown Camera, Adens, Henry's and Vistek and compare prices. I get good deals at both Aden and Henry's but others find Downtown Camera a good place, they are all fairly close to one another. Downtown Camera, Henry's and Henry's warehouse are all near the Corner of Church St. and Queen St. E and all on the South Side. Vistek is maybe a 15 minute walk east of there on Queen St. E. on the North Side and Adens is over to Yonge and just north of Dundas st. Maybe a 10 minute walk.

When I am in the market to buy something I look at every store, I have bought from Vistek a few items and most agree they are usually the most expensive but for certain items they have good deals. So go to them all and shop around.

I have never lived in downtown Toronto, but I travel a lot and my great grandparents were prominent in Toronto history so I keep in touch with the city.

Why I suggest he shop around, I do for anything I buy, not store loyal, I am the cheapest loyal as long as they are an established business with a good reputation. I look at Downtown Camera as I do all the others when looking to make a purchase, just so far have found better deals elsewhere, but when looking to buy my next item I always go in and ask at all the stores. I start at Adens and work my way until I end up a Vistek. Then I know what everyone has, the price they are all offering and then I can make a choice about which one will get my business. As you know its not a cheap hobby and shopping around just costs a bit of time and then you have all the information you need.

Well, a recent camera purchase was $100 cheaper at Downtown Camera than Henry's and then when it came to the lens, it was also $100 cheaper.
I had both prices.

Still same question, they are in a 25 minute walk 5 places to get prices and information and you went to two, where I would go to all 5. I picked a lens at random and did a price check, so you went to two and maybe could have saved more if you would have checked the other 3 options. Just saying. And if one of the Two Aden stores don't have it on stock they will get it for you.

I prefer to make sure I am getting the best deal for my money, unlike you on this purchase if you stuck between Henry's and Downtown Camera you would have paid and extra $20.00, it would cover the cost of an ink replacement for my R1800 printer and the taxes, all for a few minutes work, I like my money too much part with more than I have to. On a different lens it might be different, why it is wise to shop around.

Easy way to find out the price, and at times they have open boxes at Henry's warehouse and some incredible deals with the exact same warranty, but its hit and miss. Which lens and body did you get?
