I think it's a wave anyhow. This is right next to the Shorncliffe Jetty and is the real reason I was there last night ... to further my 'light painting' technique.
I've down a little bit of light painting before but not much and decided it might be a nice technique to pursue for now.

I've taken shots of this structure before but never kept them, always disappointed. This time I'm happy with what I got ...

So what is this light painting you speak of?

Well ... the 3rd, 4th and 5th shots here are 'Light Painting.' I've done these before but rarely and want to take it up a level now.

There are various techniques in light painting ... you might remember my bear shots ...

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3369/3217375202_08b1cec8ea.jpg http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3477/3217375160_bb608d9d69.jpg

These were a type of light painting where I set the camera on a long exposure and outlined the bear with some small led bike lights I have to create that image.

Then there was this one from my visit to Chantelle ...

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2495/3885736470_b1db8b1bcf.jpg

This one is the same type of Light Painting I did in those shots above.

The technique here is to use a torch or similar ( I used a tiny LED torch) to paint in the rocks in the foreground which would otherwise have been too dark. This one was a single exposure.

The 3 I mentioned in the first post in this thread however are several exposures. I took several long exposures (30 secs each at high f-stops to create the star bursts on the lamps) and then in each shot I light painted with a strong LED night riding bike light different parts of the structures. No flash was used in the taking of these photos, and no small animals were hurt or abused.
When I got them home I then blended several of the shots together to create those photos.

I've been inspired by a guy whose work was included in the latest edition of the Australian Institute of professional Photographers (AIPP) magazine, of which I'm a member. This guy Brent Pearson does amazing work with his specific lighting setup and has an e-mag you can subscribe to (only US$20) in order to learn his technique. I will do this soon.
Have a look at his work on Flickr and you'll see why I'm so impressed with this stuff ... and how much I have to learn yet!!!

I'm not interested so much in his fancy pants out this world lighting shots ... mainly the night landscape stuff here Light Painting - a set on Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/brentbat/sets/72157614498099373/)

So does that cause the purple glow effect in the sky as well? The second B&W looks like an IR image.

No ... that's me and some special processing that causes that ;)

Wonderful MA.
Its a great technique for highlighting your subjects and hiding any distractions.

Yes Casil ... I eluded to having an 'inspiration' in another thread and this (and Brent) was what I was talking about. I'd love to get results like he has.

Thanks also Marko and Greg.

Thanks Scopio and M!

I like the 3rd shot too because I painted from both the extreme left and the extreme right on that one which has created two different lighting qualities.
