Is Your Monitor Calibrated

Just curious who has a Calibrated monitor? Mine is done through profiles and not with a calibration tool but I have printed out photos and don't need one my colours on my screen match what I print out. I use adobeRBG 1998 ICC profile on a Macbook Pro and on my Apple Cinema Display. I also use my ICC profiles when printing and my Camera is set to AdobeRGB 1998. I have done tests for colour matches and they are dead on. I have seen so many monitors over the years where the colour is atrocious but for those who do photography, graphic arts, ect. for the most part should be done with a few rare exemptions.

I used a friend's tool to calibrate mine...but my computer crashed recently and now I need to do it again.

Monitor calibration is an important part of digital print creation especially when you want consistent results and especially when you are being paid and you are printing your own work. Depending on the brand and type of monitor you have calibration should be done and redone regularly.

Other tips include the fact that depending on the type, a monitor's profile changes as the monitor warms up so that is yet another factor to be aware of

For occasional posting on websites it may not be the biggest deal if it's not 99% accurate - but it still helps if you want to spend some bucks on a calibration tool.

There are also basic tricks like being able to see all the tones in colour and black and white swatches like this one for example.

Even though I get great colour now I know it is in my best interest over the long term to buy one. I am waiting for a new one that the sales person from Vistek Camera store informed that they were getting, it is called a ColorMunki and they were raving about is and said it was several hundred cheaper than what is on the Market now and works as well and she says even better than some of the higher priced competitors.

Is it software? Hardware?

I would like to help you out but you didn't vote in the poll, lol anyway it is both actually, the better way is with the hardware version. I will give you a link that I think explains it all very well. If not just come back and ask. It is a method to get your computer showing real world colours for printing and or other colour sensitive tasks where you need your monitor calibrated to give you true colour representation. Or maybe someone will explain it differently. Anyway here is the link
