Oooooh - good question! I am not very good with words or writing, but i will try to give it a stab.
i like the position of the model's body. . the way his face is hidden - which causes a bit of mystery.... i love the genre this pic was intended....i like the angle that it is shot - offers a bit of a modern interpretation to the pic.... i love the b/w. i love the lighting affect.
How is that? :)

Well....to explain....when I look at this photograph, I do NOT see a great shot at all.
I see a shot that I don't understand at all.......It's well done....exposure, tonal range...all that is fine. But I don't know what it means emotionally at all.....that's ok.......not everyone understands everything they see.....but that's why I asked. Cheers....Robert

fair enough. when I look at it I think of 'The Great Gatsby'. A handsome, stylish young man, looks well off (certainly well dressed) but there's a mood of being not quite satisfied with his current life.
but then again I think way too much sometimes.......:o

OK...that helps....the Gatsby connection........still, I wouldn't recognise him in that image so I just didn't see Gatsby in there.....:( Blushes....

heck no need to blush! I believe that when we look at any art (photo, painting, sculpture, anime) we look to connect with it. If we don't find the connection it leaves us cold. doesn't mean that it's not 'good' or even 'great' just that we don't relate to it. I love the whole film era from that time so it resonates for me.

Tefnut 7 - I am enjoying learning about lighting and mood setting in the 'Old Hollywood' style. This style is not for everyone as photos of abstracts or flowers or landscapes or animals or portraits or city scapes or -insert category- may not be other's preferences...
I am glad that you asked the question that you asked, as your question was a really good one!
Bambi - It pleases me oodles that you enjoy the same style that I do!

Surely TT you aren't suggesting that we all have our own opinions and accept other peoples views for what they are ... their views. Furthermore you can't seriously think that we can also have our own preferences to various styles and genres within the photographic field!! ;)
I thought it was a good shot as it was because it simply is well done in the ways you mentioned yourself. I, personally, don't really find myself drawn to this shot but I don't need reasons beyond the technical to appreciate it.
