Or so says everyone but me..I'll wait a bit more..

Sorry they are dark. I really couldn't believe how fast the sun is down after my hubby comes home from work. Guess most shots will wait till the weekend now!!!

Either way..I've been slacking and needed to do something.

This is for the sleds to use..

And this is for the rest of the vehicles. The pink hue is from a light above me but thought it made it kind of neat looking. Either way..soon enough you'll get some of the road itself and fishing huts. Till then.. :)

Nice, I love the North in the Winter. The lakes were just freezing when I was in Northern Ontario last week. I didn't think I would like ice fishing until I tried it, quiet relaxing and enjoyable. I even prefer when I can get a hut and no one else is around the solitude is just fabulous and it is the only fishing I ever do.

What is this? An 'Ice Road?' Does this mean it was water until it froze over thick enough to now be a road to cross the water?

I've heard of these if I'm on the right track. Billy Connolly talked about one in northern Canada that trucks use. How they mark the road though?

Yes. Where my summer dock photos are is where our ice road begins. It's something like 12 km long up the lake to get to the town of Red Lake. The road is mark by little trees but you can see it as the plows go over it when it snows.

Just a quicker way to get to town for everyone on this side. Also those that live on the island can now drive over instead of the ferry or their own boats.

I will get some more for you MA!

If this works..google mapped it here..I'm up in the right (Cochenour) so we take of on the lake, pass McKenzie Island and go down to Red Lake. http://maps.google.ca/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=114236758401565441689.000463c0bea7a78e57c18&ll=51.050136,-93.804703&spn=0.066906,0.154324&z=13

Hmm..which reminds me I've moved since I've been on there last..lol.

whoa Kat you are up north!

There is a native community several hours drive north from us but you only see them when all the lakes freeze over as that is the only road way they have to get here.

The kids will come once a year for a hockey game. Last year, my husband ended up giving away some of his gear to them as they didn't have much. It isn't all glory to be that far up that is for sure..from what I hear.

Thanks Kat .... very interesting.

To drive the ice road you obviously need studded tires or similar? Or chains?
I guess snowmobile would be the go :)

We just have our winter tires (more little stud thingies on it). Chains aren't allowed in some area's as it tears up the roads..well ours at least as they are horrible.

One is only suppost to drive 25kms along it but most don't and if you go slipping..it's into a little snowbank..although we have yet to do that.

I think the creep part is when you get out and some areas you can hear the cracking..even though it's so think no worries.

I can well imagine the cracking would be very frightening to the newbie ice road driver!

Interesting little link there Greg. I hope they got that tanker out of there before it leaked anything!!

Man those ice roads are wide!!

Fascinating that the speed must be low so to stop waves under the ice.

When I was a kid we lived up north, my father had two trucks go through the ice. He always went across the lakes with the window open to escape. As a forest ranger the winter was the only time he could get to some of the remote places to check the health of the forest.

I think the ice roads here has been open for about a week or so. We also have a few reserves around here that use them to get supplies in the winter. There are alot of ice shacks out now too. Saying that I haven't been out on the ice yet, I like the idea of rock under my feet. :)
