View Full Version : Camera gear in signatures

On many forums we see people list their camera gear in their signature.

I've always looked at this to be a bit ... Pretentious? Elitist? Not really sure of the word I want here.

However, Bambi's recent decision to save and go DSLR shopping has really made me think on this.

I've been critiquing her efforts without any thought that she has been using a point & shoot camera all this time. I'd have had more appreciation for her work if I'd known/remembered. Unless the P&S camera is the likes of the Canon's G10 or similar then it's definitely a disadvantage when compared to a pro or prosumer level DSLR.

As I thought about it further, I realized that we often critique people's work and tell them a different zoom might be better. Some people might only have a prime lens or something like an 18-55mm zoom only so they can't be expected to easily attain short DOF for instance.

So, seeing as this is primary a learning website ... I'm wondering if encouraging people to include a list of their gear isn't a bad thing after all?

um, thanks MA :o

I like this idea. It would help me to see what people are using.

I have to say, it's seeing what's possible on this website which has given me the desire to have an dSLR.

Yeah, it's definitely a consideration if only to help the person doing the critique to understand the limits of what they are using.

On other forums I did it because people were always asking what kind of camera I used and what gear. I finally just put it in my sig then only the Illiterate would ask:rolleyes:

I'm thinking you could post the camera details with the photo if you want a critique. I don't like the pretentiousness of the mine's bigger than yours list.

It makes no difference to me either way in all honesty whether one posts their stuff or not. I think if you want the exif data you can get it or ask for it. I also think that it's not the equipment that makes the image in alot of cases...more knowing what settings to use and how to vision the image before you shoot it. I've seen many excellent shots taken with a P&S camera and I've seen many not-so-great shots taken with a high end DSLR and lens. I would hate someone new to photography think that (and I think it's easy to send that kind of message) they have to go out and buy high end equipment to get a nice image when that in many times is simply not the case. They should first learn how to use the settings to their advantage and I think that is way more important than equipment.

Could this "pretentiousness not be a preconceived notion of intent though. could that argument not be defensive also "How come I don't have as good a setup as you"?

We certainly don't want to intimidate newer photographers by having a list in the sig! That reason alone makes me shy to encourage this.
So far I guess assuming everyone is using a DSLR unless they mention otherwise has worked very well.

I try to save my photos using "save as" in PS so the EXIF data can be seen. I down loaded free EXIF viewing software from the Mozilla Firefox site so I can see other peoples EXIF data if it's included.

Also do both. But most people don't save with exif data.

Exif data is data that is saved with the photo file. It includes stuff like the model of camera, lens used, time the shot was taken and date, the settings such as f-stop, shutter speed and also the focal length (18mm, 50mm, 400mm etc).
When you save the file as a jpg with a program that retails this data it allows us to see this information when viewing it in websites such as Flickr. When using Firefox browser, we can use an addon that allows us to right click and view this data also.
This exif data is lost when combining several files so HDR does not retain the data. However, single photos do.

Does that help?

Is this helpful? I don't wish to wear my differentness like a badge, but the help I've had on the internet has frequently been to use layers and this tool or that tool. One suggestion with some flare was to dodge, or is it that burn, it out, whereas all I could think was that I should have had the hood on and next time, hopefully, I'll do better. I want to get it right in the camera. Sorry if I rained on anyone's parade, that was not my intention, Kurt

When you put a photo up in the critiques section people will often look at post processing ways to make it better as well as ways to take it better in the first place.
If you prefer to hear people's opinions on how you should have taken the photo in the first place and not get the post processing advice then I guess ask for that when you post the photo. We are all happy to offer what we think, especially when we know exactly what advice you are looking for.

I actually get it why people do that. I don't think it has something to do with being elitist. I think many people (well, at least me) wear they camera with pride. Not because I think it makes be better in any way, but because I've worked hard for it. I've studied it to master every setting and button. But most of all, because it is mine. I know there are better camera's out there, but this one happened to be bought by me. It's like your first car, you know it's a piece of ****, but you still love it. Because it is yours. You own it.
So I don't mind putting my gear in my signature. I usually have something silly in there, but if it helps to put my stuff in there, I will happily oblidge. :)

And I have the deepest respect for people who can make the most beautiful pictures with a 50 euro camera...

I think the opinions here show we don't need to add the camera gear to the sigs. But I think it may help in some cases if we add what gear we used when asking for a critique.

I think we established that adding gear to the sigs isn't necessary but I don't think it's quite that cut and dried.
I think it depends on the photo and the critique given itself. For instance, some people here have a prime or short zoom lens only. What's the point of us telling them to re-shoot with a long zoom .... or wide angle ... or any DSLR features if they only have a point and shoot?
In the end though, if they are given advice that constitutes gear they don't have then at least they can see what advantages there is to buying that gear in the future.

Looks like the desicion is already made. But I want to add something about gear listing.
In addition to what Mad Aussie said, listing gear may be useful if you want to borrow or rent a lens for example for people in the same town. Also, if I'm buying a new toy and another member have it, I will ask him about it first before any review. For studio gear also, I may find something cheap that I didn't know about. So it may be helpful.
We can start a new topic with members gear (for those who want to). And put a link to each post in the signature. So if you want to see the details you click on the link.

Agreed...I think it was already established. I do not consider giving advice to reshoot with a zoom or wide part of a critique.

I look at the following when critiquing.... I know :offtopic:

Composition
Technical camera work
Craftsmanship in post processing

I do not give advice about buying gear either.. I think we focus too much time on gear. I do agree that you need certain lenses to get certain looks.
Now if someone asks, I will throw in my :twocents:

That's just my opinion though:)

That is certainly a great idea:)
I live in the US so I am out *LOL* but for those who live close GREAT !!!!

Now one thing about lending gear. I held an event this past Sunday and I lent my camera to a photographer to do some family images. Well he almost dropped my camera when going from one group to another and this guy is a full time professional!!!!! I almost had a heart attack. All I am saying is lending gear can be a risk. Who is going to pay to have your camera or lens repaired.

One of the things I like about flickr is the additional information section. As a learning photographer I can go there and see exactly what settings were used for a shot I really like. How did the photographer achieve the look technically? I'm also keenly aware of what gear they use and over time have noticed that certain brands of body and lens produce a certain signature look. If I see a great shot that knocks my socks off and it was shot using a camera and lens I own then I really get the investigation going because I now want to know how to get my gear to do what I'm seeing in the posted image. If anything it's a learning tool for me Whether it's shot on a Holga or a Hasselblad, I like to know these things:)

I've always done that also M. 'More Properties' gets hit a lot when I'm trolling around Flickr.

It's hard to know what you are seeing sometimes though. Many of my photos are saved by my processing skills. I know lots of photographers that can take a better photo than I right out of the camera. Many of them live right here at ph.ca.

EXIF data was mentioned on the previous page. It is a great way to see what settings were used to get some pictures. I usually try and save my exif data. Unless something is terribly wrong with an image and I really need to rework the image, my exif data is usually there.

This is great for most situation. You should note however, that us Pentax users cannot give you all that pleasure sometimes. When Pentax entered the DSLR market, the new DSLR bodies accepted all of its old lenses from the past decades. Since they are full manual lenses, there is no electronic contact for the body to read aperature settings. If you do come across some exif data that is missing its f-stop data, it will probably be a Pentax camera, and you would have to ask what aperature they were using. If you are like me, your past life experiences may leave you forgetting what the setting was. Sorry, maybe thats a reason for you to buy Canon or Nikon.

I busted the the aperature and auto focus pins on my 70-300mm so I have to manually adjust the aperature and zoom. Now the camera cannot read the aperature or the zoom. Again, I usually forget after a day or two what the settings were. Dont worry though, my cameras still work.

i've done it both ways, including a brief list of my gear in my signature, and not. i've pretty much decided it doesn't really matter either way. most of the time, i include the camera model, lens, and basic settings in my posts anyway, so readers can gauge how the shot was taken. with that information in the post, including a gear list in my signature seems a bit redundant...

JJ, I use an old manual Nikkor 105 f4 on my D300 and I just programmed it into the camera's memory. Now the camera knows when it is attached and what the f-stops are. Of course it is still manual focus. I think it shows the fstops in my exif as well. Going to go check on that.

May I add my opinion even though I am new?

I might be stepping on toes, but I think its important.

I do not think there is anything wrong with it at all.

The camera one uses has nothing to do with the outcome of the shot itself.

The camera is just the tool. It's the persons vision, artistic eye, emotion and passion that dictates what is a great photo as opposed to a so so photo.

I use both a manual Nikon and a Canon Digital, but if I did not have the eye or the passion, it would not matter one bit what type or size or power the camera has, the shots would be blah.

I have seen some fantastic, unbelievable shots taken with a Point and Shoot Camera and the price tag of the camera was laughable compared to what I have spent.

I have been humbled by a person who uses a throw away camera.

I really think too many people think its all in the equipment, and its not. Its in you.

That's only partially true. I mean, why else do we spend so much money on gear if anyone can do the same with let's say, a 50 euro point-n-shoot? If you use crap, only crap is going to come out. Artistic or not. That why we measure things like noise, CA etc. ect. Otherwise, my old Mavica FD7 would still be usable. It isn't, trust me. But expensive equipment doesn't ensure great pictures, that much is true...

It all depends how literal you want to take the statement. I didn't. I took it as a general statement and simply assume we are talking about reasonable cameras in the first place. I've seen many photos by good photogs from entry level cameras that crap all over much, much more expensive, better cameras in the hands of someone who doesn't know what they are doing.
But in the literal sense I agree 42 ... better equipment does aid in getting good shots, IF the photog is also good.

It's like dressage: a master rider and a high quality horse make the best combination. A master rider can make an ordinary horse better but only to a certain point. A high quality horse in the hands of a poor rider can look less then ordinary.

Actually ... my wife loves her iphone signature because it alerts her customers that she's not in the office. Sometimes she only has time to answer with a one line answer instead of a more complex answer they'd get in an email. Seeing the iphone signature they understand she's out and about and busy and understand, and don't expect too much. So for her business, the signature is handy and useful.

All I say is personalize it. Like:

This email is from my office leash
I'm out, but I'm here for you
Replying to you from the road

Make it interesting :lightbulb

cute! I guess it would depend on who you would be sending some e-mails to. I am not sure my boss would love the signature.

For yours you'd have to put something like;

Response sent while working hard away from the office.:laugh::laughing:
