I took this on the little guy's first birthday. He's my best friend's baby and one of the kids I nanny.
What do you think?

This is a nice shot but there are a few technical issues which would have made it a great shot. First off, it's a little over-exposed - just a touch. Next little problem is the lack of catch lights in the eyes making his eyes look almost black and the DOF is a little shallow making one eye a little out of focus.
Hope this helps!

Not being a parent, or even a person especially well disposed to anyone not at least old enough to vote, the 'cute child with food on the face' doesn't really appeal. That however is purely subjective and personal. Iggy nailed the key points to which I'll add that with a little more work, you could pully a truly nice image out of this one: Crop immediately below the nose and perhaps a bit from image left so that you have only an eyes/nose portrait, increase the contrast slightly and try a little sharpening on his right eye/brow.
There's no EXIF data with this image, so I don't know what aperture was used, but for future reference, always do your DoF guzintas before hand so that you know what's going to be in focus.
I've come back to this several times. As mentioned above I see that as well.
I'm just wondering if some of the highlights and eye darkness may have to do with your BW conversion.
I too would of like to have seen a little smaller aperture (F11..F16 that way) as so that the food on the face is a bit sharper, as that is a big part of this photo.
I see a little finger tip/hand on the bottom I would crop that out.
I am a mother of three and I can see this photo being well liked. From a technical point things to work on but don't let that ruin the moment of this photo.

i love the shot and composition but i would have liked to have seen a more efficient focal point... one that maybe gave texture to the stuff on the baby's face and/or something to pronounce the baby's eyes....
