This is my second attempt at making this chess table talk. Did I come close?

I saw that table too and thought that it had possibilities. I don't know your earlier attempts (but I will look for it).
I like this photo overall. It makes me think of possibilities. Also there's a serene feel to the picture that promotes contemplation (or I'm feeling philosophical tonight).
the centre is sharp and I like the softer focus for the board far away but I wish the part closest was in focus. Not sure if a boost in contrast might make a bigger impact.
I also wonder if adding a couple chess pieces in the foreground might add a bit of punch. It would also be cool if you could catch some interesting characters playing.

I like the photo! Though... as a chess player, it's hard for me to view a board from any perspective other than as if I was sitting behind it (ie. 'square on', dark square in the bottom left corner). Nice textures.

Don't look too hard. I never posted them!
I've never actually seen anyone playing at these tables or any other tables in Halifax for that matter. Michaelaw seems to have people who play in his neck of the woods though.

yeah, I found that out on a search. I did, however, find out about your near arrest :p

Cool shot Ig.
About the only critique I would offer is that you chose 1/3200th at f3.5 and got a very narrow DOF. I would think a wider DOF might have given this a better 'chess board' feel and seeing that you used 1/3200th it's obvious that you could have selected a higher f-stop to gain more DOF and still had plenty of shutter speed left. This is just my guess from looking at this though. Can't say I'm adament about it :)

I like the way you shot the chessboard - but I think you should place a chessman as an eyecatcher.

Sure it is a chessboard and not a checkers board? :clown:

Thanks for the feedback. Maybe I'll drag a king or queen with me next time. I thought about having it all in focus but something about the shallow DOF appeals to me.

give it a shot and see what happens. I don't mind the DOF but I do want the first square in focus....but hey, that's me and it's not all about me. or is it? :evil2:

I like the shallow DOF too. I think with some pieces in focus the shallow DOF will really work.

A single chess piece, or perhaps two would make this sing! My first thought on seeing it was; "Oh, Wow!". I just saw the geometry which is great, but a chess piece would give a story. I might, were I you, put the king on his side, perhaps towards the back. That might be a very good photo. You have a good eye. Kurt

I agree with adding the chess pieces, I think that would add a lot more to this image. Maybe a hand dropping a king in defeat as if an epic battle had just occured, ;)
