I wasn't sure where I could post this thread since show your photo forum is set in three separate sub-categories of subjects, and the photo assignment forum strikes me as being reserved for official (as in Marko's) monthly assignments... But I'm betting all of you have at least one photo that is technically flawed, or just sheer crap, but somehow works for you... perhaps you can't even explain why...and perhaps you're just too shy to post it for fear of the likely barrage of insults to your lack of skill (surely wouldn't happen in our friendly forum)? I'll throw a couple soon in if this thread gets any response, but I'm still deciding which one(s)- I have a big reject pile. Sorry for being redundant if this has already been done here recently....

OMG- I like those shots...
Well I'll have to post some of my better rejects later to make up for this one- I'm talking the real car wrecks that are soo ugly but you just can't look away for some reason.....hehe
HOld on..you get the better..I'll get the worse! LOL!

Okay...here's this one...I HDR'd it and I kinda hate how it turned out, yet at the same time I kinda like the gaudiness of it also!
I also toned the saturation down as well if you can believe it!

Here's another couple.... When at the Stampede Pow Wow competition i thought it would be kinda cool to show the feet of the dancers, however it didn't quite work out as I had hoped (blurry and the white balance is all wrong and gotta love the cigarette butt :headslap:) but I am still kinda drawn to them for some reason.
Oh and the Robin with a mouthful of worms was an after thought also. :)
Great idea for a thread btw!

I like this one but I am thinking it's a bit lacking in something but I'm not quite sure what. It's definitely a bit of a reject.

Interesting. These are the rejects yet I like most of them. I find that we are so focussed on the trees most of the time that we forget to look at the forest.
Need an ego boost? Post some of your photos on Facebook where "non-photographers" hang out. They don't become blinded by the details.

Iggy, I like something about that one too, but i get what u mean about missing something. I guess the mind expects to see a chess piece of some sort?
Casil, I really like the HDR flower shot. On the native feet shots, were you right up at the pow-wow stage wearing a cowboy hat (light colored), got there before the show began, a little right of center stage (stage left i think they call it)?

Here's another screw up that somehow works for me. At my son's last birthday party in the local park, I tried to get an interesting perspective by laying on the ground. And the two boys here sorta posed and I took a quick shot before even thinking of focus mode or technique, and of course the camera's AF grabbed the "barrel" of the gun pointed at me. So at home when this shot loaded on the computer, my 1st thought was well that's a reject, but then I looked again and thought about the whole story behind it, and immediately thought to myself- it looks like I just got whacked by the Dollar Store Mafia....and I just get such a chuckle out of it ever since....that I was lying on my back with my vision going blurry staring up the barrel of a toy plastic pistol.

I was slightly right of center stage not quite upfront...probably about 8 feet back slightly on the hill. I was wearing a purple shirt, had a pentax camera, black camera bag and light coloured shorts...no cowboy hat. I am quite tall for a girl so you might have noticed me (most people do). If you were the person I saw, you had a pentax camera, grey-ish short hair, light coloured shirt of some kind and standing taking pictures to my left and slightly forward if I remember right..
And yes I did get there before the show started.

Anybody know what happened here? I shot with ISO 100 film and it appears awful grainy to me, or is it just washed out? That's grass in the foreground but you'd never know it.

Hard for me to tell with my unrefined eye but usually grain/noise is more a problem with underexposed shots. So unless this was a dark shot that you boosted heavily exposure or brightness in post processing I'd say you have a combination of wide aperture giving you a very thin depth of field (giving you a lot of blur in places where it maybe doesn't belong, at least not in this particular shot from that angle) and slight overexposure. And I'm also wondering about how it was converted to B&W- looks like individual colours need to be tweaked. Anyone else got a better guess?

I have the same problem, I'm afraid.

That was shot on black and white film, TMax 100, no conversion. On second glance it isn't really grainy, the tree shows that, so I don't even have the vocabulary to describe what I see there.
Thank you, Kurt

@kurt just goes to show how digital-centric my mind works these days, hehe
@Raiven- Exactly!, I almost wanted to try photoshopping it to look more like a real barrel, but then I thought ahh poo, the kid on the left is holding a colourful plastic something rather anyway and the whole idea of the gun being anything other than a cheap toy, barrel or not, sorta fits the concept since it's nothing but a novelty shot at best....nearly in the reject pile no less...and not worth the kinda time it'd take me- a PS newb- to pull off.

Here's a shot of a kingfisher I followed around the pond for I/2 an hour (:wall-an:) and attempted to catch...every time I got anywhere reasonably close she did this....Blurry as heck, and noisy too but then again I sort of like it! The brown belt around her middle makes her a she....males don't have that.
If it were sharp it would'a been the shot of the day!

OK, so you want blurry do ya? It's another technically crap photo (with enough blur to make Marko have a mild stroke) that I just think looks kinda neat in a way- it has a creepy mood to it.

1P....those are great shots! Love the eagle's eyes and the harrier...I'm dying to get a shot of either of those!
I have to say this is a fun thread...feels kinda naughty putting up these semi-crap shots!
You want blurry? how about this...funny II like the movement of this poor gopher I tormented with my lens for a 1/2 an hour trying to see how close I could get to it...every time it heard the shutter go off...back into the hole for cover!

Ok, so I was at Virgin Festival Calgary last Saturday. We are not allowed to bring 'professional' cameras i.e. any camera with interchangeable lenses. So I brought this little Olympus FE210 that I have. So besides not being able to see what is exactly on the viewing screen in the sun, this iswhat happened. I see something interesting so I point and compose the shot. The green focus light is on, I am pressing down on the shutter, my subject walks out of the shot, I am pressing down on the shutter even more fiercely, I am losing the subject and finally, finally, 'click' the camera takes the picture. WTH?
I guess, I need a new point and shoot. Anyhoooo....

Anyone know what went wrong with these? The first is medium format and in the middle of the roll, facing south about 7PM. The second is fireworks on 35mm film, but you wouldn't know they were fireworks.

Yeah I have a bunch of first nations dancer shots where I deliberately slowed down my shutter speed a bit to demonstrate motion, but still every time I post one on line I feel I gotta include that disclaimer "blur intended" because of all the sharpness freaks out there....hehe

Raiven- that 3rd shot, with the young boy, is a great shot. Could be sharper yes, but that should be salvageable somehow- it's not that far out. And to me at least that is an amazing composition and capture. Didn't you say you had Topaz denoise and adjust, or am I thinking of someone else in this forum? If you do, some use of those tools in layers and adjusting opacity could improve the apparent sharpness quite nicely... that is no reject!

Raiven, I agree with F8, that little kid shot is solid! You could maybe go b&w or color film look and if the sharpness issue really bothers you, add some grain. It's a beautiful shot! Excellent street.

I got this one last week. It's been identified as a Light Phase Harlans Red-tailed Hawk, an uncommon morph of the well known Red-tailed Hawk. It's a massive crop, making it a reject! But an "uncommon" reject! :)

I was also in a temper at the time as lecturer had changed goal posts and disallowed pictures I had already taken. Hence goal posts in the shot.
Also should have gone into field and removed the shirt off rail.
It was on auto bracket I had not expected the guy to move that much between shots.

I think I changed the lenses once.... switched from the kit lens to the wide anlgle and as I said serious dust storm at the time. It was a really dumb thing to do on my part... but i so wanted the cool shot fo the garage...I even turned the caera to avoid dust but I guess there was just no avoiding it.
Ittook me about an hour to clean all the spots off the shot and about the same to clean the sensor, (using a rocket blower, arctic butterfly and sensor solution with pec pad :headslap:) the lenses and the bag. :wall-an::headslap:

I will let you know results of exam but not due for some time yet. Shirt removed by cropping and a little Photoshop to remove ghost but the Lecturer seemed to lack command of English and considered the instruction that we must not alter the images used in exam to also mean we should not test out what we intended to do on similar images.
So I had taken two sets one to practice with and one unaltered for exam over the 6 weeks we had to prep 3 days before the exam I was told they could not be used.
I did not take enough to replace all pre taken so I used old ones anyway. I do not need exam so I will just have to wait and see!

I would not think you wanted to hang around looks cold and wet. One kicks ones self I know but you also know what went wrong however with this one I never did work out what went wrong http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs089.snc3/15718_10150130873685063_570000062_11316723_4011028 _n.jpg
The view through the doorway has taken a lab color look and this was not what was wanted. HDR can be very good but it can also cause some problems and in hind site I would have been better allowing the outside to white out then take second picture of outside and use erase tool however I still consider that as cheating!
Maybe monochrome would be answer but it was not what I wanted. I have of late taken rather a lot of out of focus shots and I miss the split focus screen of old SLR. OK the packaged lens has an auto focus function but the older lenses don't and slightly miss adjusted eye piece can really mess things up. I loved the 45 deg split on Ricoh with the second focus aid around it and wonder why the function was dropped. Or is it only my Pentax that lacks this feature?

Shooting at a couple of ducks through the fence, just for the heck of it. Too much brush, the fence showed a little in one shot, but I loved the texture and patterns of feathers on the drake. (The hen figured out I was a people and waddled back down the slope to the pond, where it was safe)
