View Full Version : Shallow DoF in action.

As always, your comments are welcome. I am still working on improving my techniques.

As an additionnal info, this week-end I thought I had some more time so I rented a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens that enables 5:1 on a full frame sensor. This is really an amazing lens. This picture is right off the camera without any mods beside adjusting contrast and saturation in lightroom.

I like the soft background. Kindly tell me what you would improve or consider doing with this one.

this photo is just right, i like the composition, the color and the shallow dof. my only comment is that it lacks brightness. i just brightened it a little bit and here's the result.

Ed is bang on here. The only thing the image needed imo as well was brightness. You may wish to play with the exact colours and saturation but Ed's version shows you the potential.

yeah i would have shot at a much slower shutter speed. or brought the subject into a much brighter arena. and with this you'd wanna light it from as many angle as possible. maybe use some reflectors if you can ((white paper does the trick in the sun))

also, i know it's fun to go as shallow as possible with DoF. but you also need to consider the delimitation of the subject with this technique. for such an extreme perspective you might wanna close that aperture a stop or so just to focus in more of the flower since the flower is so extravagant ((long and lanky ect)).

Thanks and yes, I could have done it. If fact, I did it. I had the opportunity to shoot with multiple different apertures and was a bit surprised by this one.

Your comments helped me learn a few more things and this was the purpose of my posting. Thanks.

Its a nice picture but if you lighted it you would have a better shot, also I think you mus change your angle so we can see more of the flower.
