A bit perplexed... hoping someone can answer this question... using a D80 with SB600 flash on camera. Aperture mode - where ever I dial the aperture setting, the shutter speed remains on 1/60 - the normal sync speed... is the flash output changing to compensate for the diff apertures? Exposures look good no matter which f stop I use 2.8 - 16. I thought I read that the shutter speeds (in apert priority mode) would adjust up to the max sync speed for the D80 - 1/250...

Yes, your camera will adjust flash output to get a proper exposure. At the same time, the camera will try to keep your shutter speeds above the minimum speed necessary to avoid camera shake for the lens, and under the max sync speed of the camera, wherever possible.

There is a configuration where you can set the slowest speed, it looks you were shooting at night, or dark area, and the setting is when you use flash the slowest speed the camera will accept is 1/60 (it can be changed on your menu), the flash will compensate the lack of light when possible or if you are using auto iso, the iso will also compensate.
