I currently dabble in studio portraiture - for fun. Currently using 2 SB600's. I would really like a 3rd flash and was trying to decide if the SB900 is worth the additional expense over another 600. I know the 900 can be used as a commander on camera but I dont intend to have a flash on camera when taking portraits... my D80 can use the popup flash as commander... looks like a $200 plus price difference!!

Look for a NOS or lightly used SB800; Commander functionality and a slightly higher guide number, but a lot easier on the wallet than a '900.

As you mentioned, your D80 has built in commander functionality, and any other Nikon model you might upgrade to in the future would likely include that feature as well.
I’d be looking for another SB 600 if you intend to use it for nothing else other than studio work. You can get two 600’s for the price of the SB 900 and four speedlights are better than three

Thanks - good advice as always.. I prob will go with the 600 - and save the xtra $$ for the D300 !!

Great question I was just debating almost the same thing.
I currently have a SB-800 and was thinking about getting a second flash. Just upgraded to D300 from D40x so now have built in commander mode.
Don't know if this helps but here is a comparison I found of the SB-600 and 800.

BTW I think I will get a SB-600 or maybe two...:fingerscr
