The guys chat about various things photographic but the discussion about public photography gets very interesting. Worth the 70 or so minutes.

What they have to say will be of interest to those who like to do "street" photography and as an adjunct to Marko's podcast. In most of Marko's photos from the podcast, he engaged his subjects and got very nice results. But there are a lot of "sneaky" photographers out there and what their motivations are can be suspect. If you are a woman and you encounter one of the sneaky ones photographing you, what would you think? What is the guy going to do with the photo? Also in the US especially there seems to be a sport of trying to capture non complimentary photos vis-a-vis the 'Walmart shopper' and those are just plain mean. Sometimes having a big camera and lens will shout 'professional', but quite often it will also instill confidence that are your motivations are photography related only. And yes, most people will let you photograph them if you ask.

I dropped a site when they teamed up with the "People of Walmart" site. Not photography related; satiric/comedic takes on some of the craft projects you find out there. They had already gotten borderline on some things, in my opinion, but the People of Walmart was simply over the line, as far as I was concerned. As for sneaky photography of women, there's sometimes a dominance thing going on in the first place, and women unfortunately are still subjected to too much of that on a near continuous basis.

I'm afraid I fall into that "sneaky" photographer group most of the time but it's for two reasons. 1) I have not gotten up the guts to actually walk up to strangers and ask them if they'll let me photograph them and 2) I don't want staged photos, I'm looking for candid moments which I find shows more personality.

As for The Grid. The last couple of times I watched them do critiques, I felt awful. They are just rude and insulting and provide very little help to photographers who are trying to learn. I loved Scott's day with Jay Maisel and he might do some other stuff well but when he does the critique stuff he's just a jerk.

Actually, I can not agree about the critiques. But if you have not, go back in the archive to find one where Joe McNally is the guest. He is awesome. Also KelbyOne has a fairly new segment with Joe McNally, where Joe does one on one critiques which is excellent. The cool thing about KelbyOne now is you can rent lessons instead of subscribing to the whole month or year.
