My attempt at Silhouette's of trees during sunset at the lake. Have not done much of this before. Am I on the right track - what would need improving in future attempts?

Silhouettes will vary based on the intensity of the light. (clouds versus no clouds).

The best silhouettes like most images, will be the ones with the strongest compositions. But in general, for me, silhouette are about form. These shots are a bit busy for me and so their forms are not that prominent. Shot 1 works best in this regard to my eye.

I'd say keep evaluating the image before clicking the shutter. Does everything belong? does it look good? distractions? If you aren't sure of the answer, chances are the composition isn't there yet.

Take shot 1 for example. The bottom 3rd of the image is in complete darkness. It's not helping the image. Try to 'make' the image in camera.
Hope that may help

I agree with Marko that the simplicity of the first one works best here.

If it were mine I would be tempted to crop a small amount from the left and bottom to make the tree and the sun fill the frame a little more (just enough that the left side of the palm is the same distance from the edge as the sun is on the other side)
