Hey guys,

I just completed my first week of a Project 365, and I wanted to share the images for some tips. I wasn't sure where to post this, so if this is not the right forum I apologize.

Just a quick disclaimer. I'm an amateur beginner photographer, and embarked on this project to improve my photography. So don't expect much. :)

Here we go :

Day 1 /365 - December 1st, 2012

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/Days-1-15/i-NCqS67k/3/L/1%20-%20Monopoly-L.jpg

One of my favourite games growing up. Took this while my daughter was playing with a friend.

Day 2 / 365 - December 2nd, 2012

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/Days-1-15/i-Nn4bMVk/0/L/2%20-%20Smile%20again-L.jpg

A shot of Haley posing for me. It was only the 20th time, as I finally got the settings right.

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/Days-1-15/i-2WNdFWL/0/L/3%20-%20Train-L.jpg

Shot this on my way to work. Almost tripped into the water.

Day 4 - December 4th, 2012

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/Days-1-15/i-7btGqgT/2/L/4%20-%20Zoom%20Zoom-L.jpg

A shot of my very dirty car. I'm trying to improve my automotive photography, I still feel that I have a LONG way to go. I wanted to name this Zoom Zoom, but will wait for a better shot.

Day 5 / 365 - December 5th, 2013

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/Days-1-15/i-TK82hDx/0/L/5%20-%20All%20Alone-L.jpg

I was following a thread about post processing on another forum and decided to give it a whirl. While it is pretty sloppy it was the dark effect I was looking for. My car still needs a wash...

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/Days-1-15/i-N5m69LP/0/M/6%20-%20Self%20portrait-M.jpg

Sorry for subjecting this to you guys, but I wanted to take a new avatar picture. So here is a self portrait. Quick and dirty.

Another attempt at B&W. I rushed the shot as it was freezing out side. I shot this at 2.8, I wonder if I should have kept the background in focus?

Good idea to give yourself a project to work on. You got a good start.

Hey Bucky! Welcome to the forum!
This project you've given yourself is a FAB way to improve your skills.
I can already see you have a decent eye for composition and hope to see more shots soon.

I did move this thread into the general photography forum as i felt it was more appropriate there.

Welcome again!

I'm an amateur beginner photographer
If that's true ... your photography is not showing it. Very good compositions, an HDR, interesting POV's, good processing, sharpness, and good flash control also.
It's actually difficult to suggest improvements with these. Day 5 and 7 could both use a boost to the midtones I think to make the car pop a bit more.
Great job on that self portrait also ... B&W doesn't get much better than that. It looks like you've used some external flash and placed it very nicely.
Pretty little model you have there too, she'll be very helpful to your progress I'm sure.

I'd also like to compliment and encourage this idea of showing us a week worth of shots rather than doing it daily. It's too hard to follow someone daily, and often gets a bit boring on projects like this for the followers. But checking out the latest week of effort is much more interesting I feel.

Good work!

Bucky

Wow, thanks for the great feedback. While I have been shooting for a while, I have only recently "applied" myself to learning better technique
and post processing skills. I truly consider myself a beginner.

Day 5 and 7, agreed. I should have made the car a bit more exposed. As it is now, the car blends into the background too much. Lesson learned on that one.

Thanks again for the nice comments.

I just want to clarify this for the other members of the forum. I was talking about this type of thread where someone is posting a multitude of shots as a project for a year etc. I don't want anyone thinking I don't like seeing their work on a daily basis.

Welcome! Terrific set of images. Love how you've attempted to tell a story and/or create a mood with your auto images. Enjoy how you've framed the girl's head, focusing on the eyes and great smile - wonder if some of her hair at top should be cropped out also? I like the composition of the monopoly board - do you think seeing a few hands of some players would add to the shot? As for your self- portrait, I'm blown away! In my amateur opinion, it's flawless and of professional quality. Thanks for posting. Looking forward to seeing more.

Excellent shots and great project. Everybody should have one of these.
-That lovely smile and eyes of day #2 are great.
-Day #5 may seem dark for for some people but I really like the low key feeling.
-Day #4 has nice reflections on the car.

Hey guys,

Time for another update. It is more challenging then I thought it would be to capture a shot a day, as you want to make sure every shot is as good as you can make it. Anyway, this is what I have so far.

Day 8 / 365 - December 8th, 2012

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/Days-1-36/i-VhxcXdR/1/L/8%20-%20Silo%2013-L.jpg

This is a shot of Silo 13, located in Montreal. The shot was the best of what I took, but I'm not too pleased with it.

Day 9 / 365, December 9th, 2012

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/Days-1-36/i-3WK3xZg/0/L/9%20-%20Go%20Lexie%20GO-L.jpg

Time to try some sports photography. This was shot at an indoor soccer field, and it was dark. I mean dark. Shot at 1/800sec, f/2.8, ISO 6400.

Day 10 / 365, December 10th, 2012

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/Days-1-36/i-C8jCttG/0/L/10%20-%20Attitude-L.jpg

I went to my daughters hip-hop dance class and took close to 400 shots. While I got some really good actions shots. I felt this one expressed the most attitude. I find it very amusing watching a tiny eight year old girl try to look tough. Shot at ISO 2500. Love full frame.

Day 11 / 365, December 11th, 2012

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/Days-1-36/i-JFNJ5jR/1/L/11%20-%20Close%20up-L.jpg

An impromptu portrait shot of Haley. She really is helping me get shots for this project. Was shot using bounce flash.

Day 12 / 365, December 12th, 2012

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/Days-1-36/i-xGLZr7j/1/L/12%20-%20Columns-L.jpg

As you can tell from the number of shots, I'm trying to work on my Automotive photography. Here is a shot that I took under an expressway. The center composition is questionable, but truthfully I was unsure how to compose the shot. I did figure that columns worked in a reverse leading lines type of way.

Day 13 / 365, December 13th, 2012

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/Days-1-36/i-xJFPkDZ/0/L/13%20-%20Coming%20Home-L.jpg

I was away in Philly today and did not have a chance to take any pics. I grabbed this shot on the way to my car when I got back home. It was taken with my P7100. As you can see I HEAVILY processed it and played with some textures for fun.

Day 8: Looks like you used a small aperture seeing the star burst coming off the light. Overall I think this is a great shot. I think cropping a tiny bit off the right to cut off the far right lights would help. Also it looks like you burned the bright spot on the water as it looks a bit dull. Polarizer would probably work to knock down the bright relections, but it may eliminate the star-burst if that is the effect you were going for.

Day 9: Nice pose, nice DOF, and seems to be nice noise control at such high ISO.

Day 10: Does convey attitude that you wanted.

Day 11: Good exposure of the face. Think you could open the aperture a little more to brighten the background. Also a reflector would be useful to eliminate the shadow under her chin.

Day 12: I think this composition works good. I think I would desaturate the yellow pole so it doesn't distract from the car.

Day 13: I like the tone, and the comp of this photo. I think a little could be cropped off the top, and for some reason the crease/line running horizontal in the sky is distracting me.

Everything is looking good though. Looking forward to what you come up with next week.

^^ Thanks for the great comments.

Agreed on the crease line (Day 13), but it was a pre-packaged pre-set and could not figure out how to change it. I only really use those to make a boring picture interesting.

Your night photography is excellent Jeff!

I disagree though on your car comp being questionable do the centre placing of the car ... sometimes that's the right move. In this case I believe it was due to the symmetry of the background elements. It's an excellent photo!

Time for another update :

Day 14 / 365, December 14th, 2012

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/December-2012/i-mc3DZzQ/1/L/014%20-%20Blue%20Eyes-L.jpg

Here is a shot of Lexie, my oldest. This is actually a crop from a much larger shot. Shot with bounce flash.

Day 15 / 365, December 15th, 2012

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/December-2012/i-sQS29TX/3/L/015%20-%20Rear%20End-L.jpg

Nothing like a nice rear-end to get your juices flowing. Minimal processing on this one. I'm please with the way this one turned out.

Day 16 / 365 - December 16th, 2012.

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/December-2012/i-ZsqP4cB/3/L/16%20-%20Big%20Party-L.jpg

Taken at our home last night, it is my largest group shot to date. Taken with my 24-70, and one camera mounted speedlight.

Day 17 / 365, December 17th, 2012

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/December-2012/i-P4X6Zj5/0/L/017%20-%20Soaked-L.jpg

A quick snapshot during a recent wash. Been using the trial version of OnOne's perfect suite 7. So far so good. I think I will be picking it up.

Here is another version of the same shot.

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/December-2012/i-BFsjKnV/2/L/018%20-%20Got%20Stick-L.jpg

Taken at my cousin's hockey game. My first go at Ice hockey. Need to pre-set the white balance, as I had a hard timing getting it right in post. It was pretty fun taking the pics, and I got a bunch of keepers. Shot at 1/1000, f/2.8, ISO 4000.

Day 19 / 365 - December 19th, 2012

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/December-2012/i-ZZTzRB7/2/L/019%20-%20Heaven-L.jpg

Same here. Has a calm mood to it, as opposed to the second which doesn't have much mood of any variety. Another reason is that the bright highlights softly blend into the midtones. The second one is a bit harsh, and too much white behind the car for my liking.

All in all got some good pictures this week. I guess my car would be "AWD+Snow=Perfect Donuts." :D

I'm choosing shot two for the excellent comp and perfect DOF for the car. The swooping road leads us nicely to the car and then away again as if wondering where the car might go. I might lift those mid levels a tad.

Nice shooting and processing throughout though in this set. The group shot is well also ... nice even light considering just the speedlight as extra light source.

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/December-2012/i-GHgptdJ/2/L/021%20-%20White%20Space-L.jpg

This is a submission for December's assignment. Keeping with my portrait theme this week, I figured I give this a go. This is my first composite, which was pretty fun to do, even though the background is simply a white layer. When I took the shot of Haley last night. I asked her for a mischievous look and I got a GREAT expression.

Day 22 / 365 - December 22nd, 2012

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/December-2012/i-2SfdhWv/3/L/022%20-%20Checking%20myself%20out-L.jpg

Another staged shot. This time of my eldest. She looks so old in this shot. Growing up too quickly.

Day 23 / 365 - December 23rd, 2012

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/December-2012/i-4P6N6Xj/1/L/023%20-%20Yummy-L.jpg

After a very action packed tiring sledding adventure, I took my girls to one of their favourite hangouts. Tim Hortons. This shot is semi staged. I keep wanting to put the subject in the middle of the frame. I feel her arms would have had the symmetry and leading lines to pull it off. In the end I decided to keep her a bit off centre. Was shot with a 70-200.

I'm really enjoying focusing on portrait shots.

Day 24 / 265 - December 24th, 2012

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/December-2012/i-M3MrSCh/1/L/024%20-%20High%20Key-L.jpg

My first attempt at a high key portrait. I was unsure exactly how to process it. My initial attempts simply looked like a blown out exposure. I settled here for an in-between process. I did a similar shot a few days ago. The big difference is that this was a shot blowing out the background and the shot on day 21 was a composite.

Day 25 / 365 - December 25th, 2012

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/December-2012/i-ZT37vfc/0/L/025%20-%20Low%20Key%20-%20Cara-L.jpg

Here is an attempt at a low key shot. My wife, Cara makes her first appearance to the project. I found this shot much harder to get right then the high key shot of yesterday. Out of the camera the light looked so harsh. I simply hand held the flash at a arms length to the left and triggered it with the commander mode on the Nikon. I would have liked to get a bit of white showing on the left part or her left eye. All in all, it is just okay

In order to smooth the light I went with a very de-saturated PP. I actually added in some grain to help. I think a grid modifier would help a lot.

Later guys

Looking good. I like the PP on the first one, but it does not make it look like a ghetto, the PP makes it look more clean and vibrant.
Love the background blur on the sledding one, makes here look really fast.
The shot of your wife is nice, sharp eyes, nice even lighting, and good bokeh.
With the BW I think it was a good idea to not add anymore contrast. More would probably be too much.

Day 33 / 365 - January 2nd, 2013

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/January-2013/i-dZgh8Dp/3/L/033%20-%20Couch%20Potato-L.jpg

So far portraits have been my favorite part of this project. Although, this is only a quick snapshot of Haley.

Day 034 / 365 - January 3rd, 2012

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/January-2013/i-XDq3mns/4/L/034%20-%20Cousin%20Love-L.jpg

A sunrise shot of my daughter and niece. Was taken in Florida at Deerfield Beach. As usual Lexie was not prepared, so I let her wear my sweatshirt. As you can see it is a bit big on her. They were both troopers coming with me so early in the morning. Shot with a 50mm, with a ND filter on.

Day 35 / 365 - January 4th, 2013

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/January-2013/i-bp5LjfJ/1/L/034%20-%20Pool%20Side-L.jpg

Our last night in Florida, here is a shot of my beautiful wife. Shot with my 50mm and pop up flash.

Day 35 / 365 - January 5th, 2013

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/January-2013/i-Vj8Gpvk/1/L/035%20-%20Shack-L.jpg

A quick snapshot of a lifeguard tower at Deerfield Beach in Florida. This was processed from a single raw file. I took it on the way back to my car from shooting the pier.

Day 36 / 365 - January 6th, 2013

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/January-2013/i-n2b2XS5/0/L/036%20-%20The%20Tree-L.jpg

This was a tree from our recent trip to Florida. The vines forming the trunk were very cool, and prompted me to grab a shot. This is one case where only having the 50mm(the only lens I brought with me to Florida) really hurt me, as I feel that there is too much foreground in this shot.

Looking good, don't have any gripes or complains, means you're doing something right.

Day 37 / 365 - January 7th, 2013

So this is a test / practice shot. I planned on doing this shot with Haley, but she had a play-date today, so next weekend. I wanted to get the lighting and concept down, so I did a self portrait. I will do this shot again with Haley, but I will make a few changes. The first and most important being that the umbrella let through too much light. I need to get an umbrella with a reflective surface to make this shot work.

I made the raindrops using a custom brush in Photoshop. Does anyone have any ideas of a better way?

Please no comments about why I'm reading an address book. :)

Day 38 / 365 - January 8th, 2013

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/January-2013/i-7FZJdVm/1/L/038%20-%20Gear-L.jpg

I had a major clean up in my home office, and made a photography shelf. I decided to get a picture of my gear. This was taken with my Nikon P7100. You can see the effects of the pop up flash. I think I may have gone a bit overboard on the vintage processing.

Day 39 / 365 - January 9th, 2013

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/January-2013/i-kjTdRQr/2/L/039%20-%20Deerfield%20Pier-L.jpg

The next few days will be some landscapes that I took last week while in Florida.

This is a shot of a pier at Deerfield Beach in Florida. I'm really starting to enjoy long exposure photography. This one was a 2.5 second exposure. Shot with a 50mm. I'm still kicking myself for not bringing a wider lens with me.

Day 40 / 365 - January 10th, 2013

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/January-2013/i-tCBxGx9/0/L/040%20-%20Silhouette-2-L.jpg

This was taken at sunrise just outside a Hilton Garden Inn. I had just came back from a run and saw these huge trees that dwarfed a factory in the distance. Looked cool in real life, but once I started processing it I found it was pretty dull, so as I usually do I went all psycho with the processing.

Looking at this, I find it a pretty depressing shot. So with that in mind, I have another bright color beach photo planned for tomorrow.

Great images, Bucky! I did a 365 project last year, and found sometimes I was forcing some shots. It was pretty tough! You seem to have a great momentum going! And next time you will be in Philly, send me a message....I am not to far away, just outside of the city.....

Day 41 / 365 - January 10th, 2013

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/January-2013/i-qHGhdP5/2/L/041%20-%20Fisherman-L.jpg

A slightly less depressing shot then yesterday. This was taken at the inlet in Boca Raton, Florida. I'm actually standing on the edge of the beach. Ideally I would have had a wider angle lens to allow some of the beach to show, but I wanted the fisherman in the shot so I left it as it. This was the same location as my January 1st shot. When I was composing I tried to keep three distinctive area's within the shot. Taken with a ND filter and my 50mm.

Day 42 / 365 - January 12th, 2013

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/January-2013/i-F9bDgrB/5/L/042%20-%20From%20above-L.jpg

A pretty standard sunrise shot of Montreal. The sky was beautiful and I'm not sure I did it justice. As I was driving there the sky had a perfect pink hue. I arrived about 10 minutes too late to capture it. I will go back and try again.

Day 43 / 365 - January 13th, 2012

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/January-2013/i-TqXKdgj/1/L/043%20-%20St%20Joseph%27s%20Oratory-L.jpg

This was taken about 20 minutes before sunrise. I wanted to wait for the sun, but it was just too cold outside, so I took the shot and split. This is the Saint Joseph's Oratory in Montreal. One day, I will sneak a tripod inside and get some interior shots.

Day 44 / 365 - January 14th, 2013

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/January-2013/i-WKKMSQ7/1/L/044%20-%20Ice%20Locked-L.jpg

I want to get back to taking portraits, and I also want to try and work on some still life photography so this is the last landscape for a bit. Besides, it is just too cold out in Montreal these days. Anyway, this is a picture taken from the Casino in Montreal at sunset. There is another spot about a mile to my right that I think will make a much better spot, as you will see the sun setting behind the buildings. I will get back there for sure when it warms up a bit.

Day 45 / 365 - January 15th, 2013

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/January-2013/i-LKMnXNq/0/L/045%20-%20Grungy%20Pier-L.jpg

I know that I said I was taking a break from landscapes, but I want to finish off this pier series. I have one more after this, then I'm done. Promise.

I tried processing this like a regular picture, but it was too similar to the one I posted a few days ago. So in my typical fashion I went pshyco again.

Day 46 / 365 - January 16th, 2013

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/January-2013/i-pHhshms/3/L/046%20-%20Sunrise%20at%20the%20Pier-L.jpg

Last landscape pier shot from Florida. This pier was a blast to shoot, and I felt I learnt a lot about landscapes shooting. Tomorrow, we are back to some portraits.

Day 47 / 365 - January 17th, 2013

http://jbucovetsky.smugmug.com/Galleries/Project-365/January-2013/i-jfQ7D6q/2/L/047%20-%20Sad-L.jpg

This is a sad shot.

Yesterday my eldest daughter broke her arm. Haley (pictured) was half heartedly playing with some small toys while we were waiting for news from Lexie at the hospital. She looked so sad playing, I decided to capture it. I'm not sure why it appeals to me, but I love this shot.

As for Lexie, she does have a clean break between her elbow and shoulder. She is being a real trooper and is doing okay.

Great shots again! I love the Montreal at sunrise and the oratory....both spectacular! As for wishing you had a wider lens on your trip, did you ever thin to turn the camera up into portrait mode and take a pano several shots wide and several shots high, to get everything in your shot the way you envisioned? I know that the perspective is a bit different from a wide angle lens, and it adds some time to the post processing, but it can be totally worth it!

Sorry to hear about your daughter's arm, at least it seems she is pretty tough!
