I have an Entry level
CANON 450D - kit lens 18-55mm plus a 50mm 1.8 prime lens
A cheap Jessops flashgun AD360 ( slave, swivel and bounce flash options )

as I learn I will invest in a Canon Speedlite 430 II ( better than a 3rd party flashgun )
