The streets of the Gold Coast are a gold mine of hot and/or expensive cars. Being up 34 floors for the weekend gave me the opportunity to shoot some from a perspective not usually enjoyed.

I also thought some of you non Aussies might find it interesting to see some of the cooler vehicles around here.

Thought I'd start with some of our Police cars ...
"Naughty naughty. Where are your helmets??"

Ford Falcon XY .... looks like it might be a Phase 3 with that 'Shaker' scoop in the bonnet. If so, this was the fastest 4 door production car in the world back in 1971 I think. It was Australia's fastest 4 door sedan for over a decade.

GMH (General Motors Holden) Commodore. Built and designed here in Aussie, the 2 door version is called a Monaro here but is sold as a Pontiac in the US, and a Vauxhall in the UK.

You must have the film in backwards because all the steering wheels are on the wrong side!!!

I love that 71 Ford Falcon. I would take it over any other car you have photographed.

Thanks Marko and Tiger :)

You've picked the hairdresser special there Marko ... stick with the g-string ;)

Hey Tiger ... good Choice. The Falcon of that era has a cult following. The Falcon Phase 3 GT-HO is a classic. Modified 351 4V Clevo V8, Detroit Locker 9" diff. That 'Shaker' scoop is attached to the carby so it shakes when you rev her up ... hence the 'Shaker' name.

My dream car would be a 71 purple Hemi Cuda convertible!!! That's about a 2 million dollar car. You buy redone ones for about $250,000

Were you confined to your room for a day?

Mad Aussie
11-10-2011, 01:32 AM
Yeh Matt ... and it's not like I stood there all day waiting for cars to drive by either.

We were down for a 4 day conference that my wife was attending. I was there to enjoy the room, cable TV, and just a bit of time away from home. Watched Speed on cable most of the time ... lots of NASCAR on along with some GT racing.

Cool set. This vantage point for looking at cars has me thinking about all the Matchbox cars I played with as a kid! Very cool.

There's several little yellow ones. The Mazda MX5 (called a Roadster in some countries) is one, they are called 'Hairdressers' cars over here ...and the Porsche Boxster and 959.

Interesting stuff, always interesting to see cars that are country-specific. Red cop cars!

So the burning question now is ... are you Ford or GM? :D

What a nice variety of expensive cars. However I think I like the mororcycle with sidecar the best. What can you say I prefer simple and functional.

Thanks asnow and Thoughton.

Ah, Thoughton ... the age old bogan duel of GM (Holden in this country) vs Ford. Our V8 Supercar touring car series perpetuates that debate as well.

For me ... couldn't care less :) I like good racing and good drivers.

Yeh JAS ... the 959 is a cool Porsche without being a damn 911 :)

My brother has done the wiring up (stereo's, DVD's, communications etc) in several stretch limo's including Hummers around here.

Very interesting perspective of some beautiful sheet metal MA. I am quite partial to the old muscle myself, even though I have always owned a "Yank Tank" as you call them.

Actually Yank Tanks are often liked very much by us. Aside from the newer stuff, the old 50's, 60's and early 70's Camaro's, Impala's, Buick's, Vette's, Mustangs, T'Birds, etc etc are well sort after. 55 - 57 Chev's are probably the top picks for many.
Most of our 70's Ford's are Mustangs in terms of engine and suspension with both the Cleveland and Windsors used.
The first car Holden ever made was the 'FJ' or 48-215 ... a car designed by Buick, and many of the early Holdens looked like scaled down Chev's.
Many of the Holden Commodore 6 cyl's had the Buick V6 3.8 Ltr used in many US cars such as the Pontiac.
The Chevy Lasette is designed and built here by Holden and sold as the 'Cruze' here and the Lasette elsewhere.
Our two big guns Holden and Ford both have a close relationship with their US parent companies.
