Thanks MA for your detail method! I've tried this with 2 images just for simplicity. The rocks from the brighter image (bottom layer) was merged into the main image (top layer). I used a layer mask to paint in the bit in the bottom image that I wanted. Here it is:

(the blurred water is due to long exposure of the water). There is a 2.5 EV difference between the exposures in the two layers.

Looks like you have the basics down nicely. A bit better choice of brush size, hardness, and opacity and you'll get it down without the slight halo too.

Careful of your filters (or lens hood?) as well. I can see vignetting in the top corners. You can either crop or clone it out or just pull in the wideness on your lens a bit. A lovely scene, nevertheless.
