More Herons

Like I said, Herons seem to like me. :)

I forgot to add comment, sorry! The top one is a little dark but it was taken toward sunset and the Heron was in the shade. Because of the shade, the dry grasses on the bank reflected the golden colour in the water. The second image was taken approx at 08:30 am. again in the shade, but by this time, I understood a little more about iso and shutter speed

Both are GREAT shots!!! There is not much to critique on my part. They are both very sharp, the detail on the fish is amazing. I don't find the 1st image too dark.

Get what you mean Tiger, almost like the left is not needed. it would give a better composition as well. I had to improvise with the space in front Lol, nothing but grass and a flat bank in front. The first image and the way it has come out, has led me to soften a lot of my images and keep them darker than a usual exposure. I have done the same with some of my Stag images. almost like an oil painting effect. And, I really appreciate the time both you and the others have taken with my images.

If you didn't notice, I edited my critique. I was not viewing the entire image and it looked cut off just to the right of the fish's tail. I had to save the image to my phone and than view it. The placement is perfect, just off center to the left.

I don't think it's too central. It is just off center to the left, nicely placed.

I like the 2nd shot very much. Not sure on the crop though. This is clearly an environmental photo due to the amount of pond, grasses etc around ... so I'm not sure cropping away from the original aspect was necessary. Love the green contrasting the bird. These are such an interesting Heron, not like our boring Aussie ones. I think the levels on shot 2 could stand a tweak as well.

Shot 1, again, the crop doesn't look right to me. It's heading towards panorama which doesn't suit wildlife usually. Again it looks like the levels could come up a bit. Great timing on the shot.

I'd dodge the eyes in both shots too to get them brighter again.

The second is my favourite as well. Both shots do seem to be a tad under-exposed but my monitor at work sucks so take that with a grain of salt. I'm not a fan of the composition of these shots either. I'd like to see the original (before crop) of shot one but I agree with MA that the pano doesn't feel right for this subject.

The second shot is all about the fishy action going on in his beak. I'd have to see the full size image (if this isn't it) but what I'd do with this one is crop the bottom and left so his body is almost right in the corner and present fish and beak dead centre. This kind of flies in the face of the rule of thirds but that's only a guideline. Try it and let me know what you think -- remember, art is subjective. :)

Shot 1 might look more striking with a contrast boost. Dig the eye sharpness in shot 2.
