Was driving near by here today and stopped by to grab a snapshot. We spent many a night at this old bridge when we were teens back before they turned it into a park. Think it was better then, now there are fences everywhere and signs on everything including the bridge which makes it real hard to find a good shot of it.

Cool. Why do they cover these bridges? We don't have that here.

I have never really heard a why behind them actually other than they look nice. Unless it was a way of keeping water off them and prolonging the life of the wood or maybe just giving folks in wagons somewhere together out of the rain. Not many left though, only 15 left here in Georgia.

You guessed it. A bridge made of wood deteriorated quickly. By covering them they prolonged the life of the bridge so they didn't have to rebuild it as often.
Oh, and a cool shot of a nice looking bridge. :)

So THAT's why! Ever since I used to watch the Dukes of Hazzard as a kid I wondered why every time I saw one in a show or photo.

Well in Hazzard County they were there just because it looked cook when the general lee crashed through them!
