Steveston Village fish market (Richmond, B.C.)

I used a narrow depth of field here - but was it TOO narrow? Focus is on the fish in the center. As always, general comments welcome!!

No I think it works. If it were wider, and the guy more visible/recognizable, it might look accidental. With it exaggerated like this it seems deliberate. Good colors in it too.

Looks right to me too. Of course I am biased, as I took a very similar shot recently at the fish section of the La Boqueria market in Barcelona! I had real problems getting the fish in focus while the fishmonger was in the right place in the background though, you've done a much better job there :)

I would be tempted to crop a bit off the left edge, and just concentrate on the 4 fish eyes (pun not intended :P) on the right side. It would also move the person to the left third line. Can you tone down the two bright white things on either side of the person?

I agree that the DOF looks right to me. The person in the background is just out of focus enough and the fish in the middle is nicely in focus.

Tim makes some good suggestions. The DOF, I think, is excellent as well, nice choice but some of the other elements keep it from being at that next level. Overall, a very nice shot though.

Works for me the way it is. Love the detail on the scales. Only thing I would have done is to get rid of the white spots on the blue background (top left).

Tim - my Nikon D5000 has the ability to pinpoint my focal point in my image. However, it doesn't always lock on properly for some reason, and i get blurry images from time to time, especially when there is a wide range in distance between the foreground and background subjects... Just need to take a few pics at a time, i guess...

I think the dof works nicely. My only problem is the highlights (blowout areas). It's very noticeable..and I know you can't help it as you can't move everything but it does catch the eye.

My thoughts exactly! Because of those 2 large blown out areas, I personally would not have chosen this composition. My instinct would have been a closeup on the fish or an angle without those bright distractions. (just my 2 cents)
