This is known in Heidelberg as the "Philosophen Weg", a route leading to the best vantage point to look onto the city from above. It was used by the philosopher's of the university of Heidelberg as a place of solitude and inspiration. There are a pile of fraternity buildings along the road, and once you come to the end of it, way past the gate you see at the end, there are tiered gardens and the view is amazing. However, this retaining wall had something in it I liked, and the 'orbs' are most likely the spirits of the old and long passed away students frequenting this walk ...
