See that black box?? That is what I found when I uploaded this batch of photos. The BW photo is the same photo as the black box. I edited it in Picassa-was able to save the photo, but I am not all that pleased with the results...

I have no clue how it happened. This is what I know:
-Canon 5D digital camera, Canon 50mm EF lens
-I placed my 50mm lens on about 10 minutes prior to the shoot.
-I took the photos.
-I viewed the photos on the review screen. They were ok.
-I switched lenses
-I resumed the session.
-I downloaded the photos that night.

Any help so that I can avoid this would be greatly appreciated!

Okay, how many images look like this? Did you review ALL of the images as you shot? I can't see any EXIF data on the one you've posted, but your 'rescue' is well done!

Offhand, I'm not sure what to say about this. It doesn't look quite like a normal over-exposure, at least on my less than quality work monitor. Have you tried shooting some test images to verify the camera's exposure data against the daylight exposure rule?

If it's still doing it, I would try a full camera reset, and if it continues to do it after that, I suspect it's a job for Canon.

Don't use picassa... try a different program.

I have seen this before at work. I deal with hundreds of images a day and I come across all sorts of stuff. Sometimes we will get a CD and be able to see the tiff previews and they don't open right.

Open them in photoshop.

Were they saved RAW?

Just a little more info... I troubleshoot images every night and we can probably find a solution to it.... can you send me one raw or untouched file... like the original all black one... the image data seems to still be there.

Also, you did say that the after shot preview was ok on the lcd?

no-there didn't seem to be a problem

the rest of the photos from the shoot did not have that problem - i shot about 500 images... side bar statement - they had other issues that were no fault of the camera...uh-hem.

Were they saved RAW?they were shot raw, lg format- and then downloaded to the computer, then opened in picassa, then freaked out about what i saw, did the i feel lucky command, then was tickled i could save the photo , not so much with the results- then i tried to do a quick fix in psp opening another of the black images (there were about 50 of them)which was not successful ... did not take the time to try manually to fix, pouted, then went to bed, fell to sleep and had nightmares that no one would ever trust me to photograph them again.

can you send me one raw or untouched file... like the original all black one... the image data seems to still be there.the image here (the black one) is the original - do you me email it?

Have you heard of or seen GIMP? It's free and might help you have a secondary program. You might want to get it and see if this happens.

Sometimes, I have problems with Picassa doing weird things to images. I love picassa but I have found that it is glitchy sometimes. Sometimes when I edit pictures in photoshop it gives this polarized look or all black in picassa later.

Have you heard of or seen GIMP? i have a gimp - have not played with it at all, yet...have manuals that i bought to learn the program... and, what a great suggestion! -thanks!!!

I'm not clear though - all the photos are black until you changed lenses? If so, isn't it likely the problem is with the lens?

what was the exposure for the black shot and what light was it shot in? does the exposure 'seem' correct to you?

I'd definitely call canon on this one....ESPECIALLY if I put the 50mm on again and I see the same thing. :confused:

*smacking head firmly* DUH! I just got the lens this past week and that never occured to me...Yes it is a new, not used. I will test it tonight when i get home..

Tested the lens, it is ok. The camera is functioning aok as well. maybe a fluke?
Maybe the photography gods telling me to find my knitting needles and that I have been a very bad knitter since I have barely knit a thing since I returned to photography?

Seriously though, I guess I won't worry about it unless it happens again.
But, if any one does come up with a reason, I am open to reading about it!
