How about selective focus for the OCTOBER theme? Something along those lines might be kind of fun to work with photos where only the subject (or part of the subject) you want to emphasize is in focus.
I did it in as a challenge in another forum and it was really quite fun. :)
selective focus is a wonderful subject. Since we are oct 1 today and this suggestion has no competition, it wins and is the level 2 assignment this month. Gimme 15 min to make it so.
Thx!

Ok members,
The theme for this level 2 assignment is selective focus (thx casil). This means that we selectively focus on a certain part of our subject usually with a large aperture.
Ok then? who will post first?
Ok, here we go with a couple of quick tries with a new (as in picked up about an hour ago) Nikkor DX 35mm f1.8, shot at 160 sec, f1.8

Cool shots, Ed and Jude! Ed the 35mm 1.8 is the lens I spent the last month with on the 1 camera 1 lens project. It is sharp as a tack.

Picked one leaf off a bush in my back yard. Took it to the "man-cave" as my wife calls it. Onto the black poster boards it went. Founds some modeling sand. made a little heap and then placed the leaf on it. Got the camera set up with the macro, and then ....

Cool set. I like the first one in this set. I also like how you find time to play like that. Very nice! :)

Thanks, Iggy. I have to admit that playing with photography is very therapeutic for me. Takes my mind off things that are not so pleasant in life. It provides a creative outlet and helps me cope with day to day bull crap. So I take all the time I can, when I can.

So, I think I know what "selective focus" means and I think it has to do with highlighting your subject by using a narrow depth of field. But does it have to be "in a crowd"? Does my entry below qualify?

Lovely shot Andrew!
Iggy your shot works for me though it's unconventional to my eye. Usually the selective focus is from foreground to background but in your shot it's from left to right...no rules though, all good.
found these when clearing out some shrubbery to make way for a new wood fence in our backyard, thought they might make an interesting subject for this assignment.

I'm not sure I understand the difference. That's one of my niggles about our assignments is that I sometimes don't always understand what we are supposed to achieve. With the "no rules" option I can enter anything that I think is cool but what I want to know is "am I achieving the assignment?"

shot this with my nikkor 60mm macro lens at f2.8
Andrew: really nice colours and composition
Iggy: cool capture - side to side, front to back or only in the center with foreground and background out of focus, relax and have fun with it.

Nice work everybody!!!
It's so interesting to see everyones take on the subject . So much variety and neat ideas . I'm really enjoying this thread .
Here's mine , I used the selective multi point focus on my camera .... Something I should remember to use more often , instead of using center focus and moving the camera to compose the scene ...

Hey guys. Not quite sure if these 2 shots qualify as selective focus........but what the hey!;). I took these a while back. One is a leaf hanging on a branch on a chilly winter morning that even picked up a bit of the frost on the branch. The other is a young deer coming up to the car window while the wife and I were out on the island feeding them 1 day. This little guy was not shy at all. I've always kind of liked this shot in particular. I must admit though when I took these "selective focus" was not on my mind.:)
