What Computer is Best

Hi guys ...

I am new to digital photography and now looking to buy a computer that will fit in my needs for photo editing. I am looking at two options:

1. Dell M1530 (Notebook) with 15.4 Inch Screen plus Hi Resolution 1440 X 1200 with glossy LED display

2. Apple IMac (Desktop) with 20 inch screen 1600X1200 resolution but no LED display but glossy LCD display

3. Open to other options.

Can anyone recommend what type of screen/computer is ideal for photo editing?

I am looking to spend $1500.

You need a fast computer with a large harddrive 500 gigabyte plus and a CRT monitor.

If you are serious about photo editing, IMO stay away from laptops as you'll want a nice big bright screen suited to photo editing.Most laptop screens won't cut it.

http://www.eizo.com/ is the cadillac (or one of them) of monitors.

Mac VS PC - not touching that one, it's personal preference - macs are more expensive and have less software choices but many people find them more intuitive. But at this point either platform can do almost every task really well.

You'll need a decent graphics card (not necessarily the best)

I'd recommend Minimum 4 GB Ram.

If you are a rookie to photography, I would not recommend starting with the best package unless money is no object. I say this because passion fades fast and there is a learning curve to all this. Not everyone that takes up photography (or many things actually) sticks with it. We DO encourage you to stick with it though because it's a GREAT time to be into photography.

I am not really going to touch this much eather lol but i do own a mac and a pc and prefer my mac for image editing ( just IMO though ) the reason i like macs more for image editing is becouse i have used both aperture 2 and lightroom 2 and prefer aperture 2 which is only for the mac plateform soo... but by all means i am no mac fanboy lol

Go PC. A $1500 PC can outperform a $3000 Mac.

If you are not comfortable with computers or this is your first get a Mac, it will be easier on you.

There is a reason that Mac went Intel. Mac's are easier out of the box to production, they are easier when it comes to maintenance too. I have both and I prefer my PC as my workhorse for photography. There is no real difference anymore between the performance of the computers.

If you get a PC with Vista you gotta get lots of memory. You will still pay less and have a system that will do more than you need for about 3-4 years.

I have used both Mac and PC for years. People are emotionally connected to Mac and are die hard fans because it is a status thing now, like having a Harley. You could buy a less expensive bike that has all the same specs but is missing the Harley emblem... Well, they perform the same... the Harley carries a status symbol with it.

IF you want to do everything that you could possibly want to do with photos get a PC and save a couple bucks for that good monitor.
