I am back from our little trip at the Mosel. Some pictures weren't the best one, but with some Photoshop treatment here and there I can present you the castle "Afterglow":

Made out of two pics - here are the two originals http://www.sagas-welt.de/4images/details.php?image_id=80. The castle I shot out of the car; the sunset I saw out of our room on the winegrower yard.
Does the combination work?

this totally works MM! I love the light on the castle wall and the sky with the streak of light is lovely. :)

I think the shot does work, but for me the sky part of the image is more impressive than the castle.

oh I agree but I do think that the castle sets the mood of the shot.

I looked at your original of the castle. The sky definitely needed help. Nice work combining them. I think the sky helps give the castle an impression of "lord of all he surveys".

Very cool ... love that sky and streak. What was the streak?

Cool photo-merge, it definitely revived the castle shot.
You might have found better sharpness with a smaller aperture, however the combo totally works.

I often shoot weddings and events, and all of them are indoors, so my usual settings are f/2,8 iso 400-800 and speed varies but its around 1/60s

I kind of like the result, using it wide open usually removes the nuisance around the subject such as light switches or people peering from behind, also makes the flash power to be more efficient.
My flash is always bounced with a white/silver cardboard atop the flash head with ev+1.

The photo does lack sharpness
