I've found that since the recent site upgrade here that Flickr photos show at a very much reduced quality ... hence me using the BBCode from flickr to make my photos clickable to the photos on Flickr itself.
What I just discovered is it's only happening on landscape orientations. I just posted some Portrait orientations and they are displaying fine here.
You might be able to find a way to rectify this Marko, not sure.

thanks for letting me know MA - I'll look into this very shortly and it sounds fairly easy.

How did you go with this Marko? Just posted up some whale watching photos and I see the issue is still apparent.

Hi members,
I have disabled a setting that may help with this flickr problem. can you do a test if you don't mind?
Also what would be helpful is to describe in words how you are 'attaching' the flickr image to the post.
Please feel free to use this very thread to test.
many thanks!

Looking pretty good Marko.
I'll try another with some text on it ...

Hmmmm still some slight compression there I think. Compare that last shot's text and size to the original on flickr Humpbacks Love Playtime | Flickr - Photo Sharing! (http://www.flickr.com/photos/astrovisual/5045081053/#/photos/astrovisual/5045081053/lightbox/)

Just looking into the Image Info (right clicking with Firefox and using the 'View Image Info' link) from this whale photo above posted in ph.ca and I get this ...
875px × 638px (scaled to 800px × 583px)
My black border makes my 800 x 583 pic a max size of 875 ... which the forum is then reducing.

Thanks MA - can you describe in words exactly how you are posting these flickr images. Lame I know, but it may help - Thx!

I've tried two ways.
1. Simply grabbing the whole BBcode in Flickr. Sharethis/choose original size/check BBcode/copy and paste
2. As above but select HTML instead of BBCode and then don't grab all the code, just the actual URL from within that code.

it's not just flickr, it does the same thing to smugmug images.

I hope it's okay to do this MA but for consistency I'm gonna test this with your images...
This is a rightclick to copy the image's location. Then i click this icon http://www.photography.ca/Forums/images/editor/insertimage.png.
and i enter the URL I pasted and i UNCHECK the Retrieve remote file and reference locally checkbox. This is the result.

and now i see for myself that there IS compression still going on after mucking....back to the settings. Thx - marko

And now compare that whale tail image of mine you've posted against this one viewed, uncompressed, directly on Flickr ... Humpbacks Love Playtime | Flickr - Photo Sharing! (http://www.flickr.com/photos/astrovisual/5045081053/#/photos/astrovisual/5045081053/lightbox/)
You'll see it's much sharper.

Hi everyone - so sorry for this trouble.
Seems the issue is related as MA correctly noticed to images wider than 800 pixels. This is why the problem seems intermittent, it won't affect images smaller than that.
I will try to fix this today myself or get someone smarter to fix it tomorrow.
again sorry for the hassles,
Marko

I do believe this problem is now fixed.
Right clicking on the images in this thread at THIS POINT IN TIME shows that they are now uncompressed and look identical to the Flickr images
SO LONG AS THE WIDTH DOES NOT EXCEED 1025 PIXELS, no compression should occur when images are uploaded directly OR if they are pulled from Flickr. These numbers can be adjusted if need be. If the image is uploaded directly to the board keeping under 250K also guarantees no compression.
So i do believe this one is solved but please let me know if you find anything.
many thx as always!

It would appear the problem has resurfaced. Perhaps an update has defaulted the resixe settings?

Looks like the same as before ... landscapes are being resized I think ... portraits are fine.

This is correct - it's back. I've tried to fix this myself just like the last time but it's not working.
For now 800 pix wide is the threshold.
I already have a call out so hopefully we can fix this fast.
Sorry for the hassle - Thx - Marko
