Sold my D60, 18-200, and SB400 flash to an interested buyer. Bought a D300. Wow! What a comfortable camera.

Currently short on zooms now. My 18-200 filled a lot of holes.

Can't afford the Nikor stuff right now so was wondering if anyone had any experience with the

Sigma 24-70 2.8

and

Sigma 70-200 2.8 APO HSM

or any other opinions on third party lenses that fit the 24-70 70-200 2.8 format.

Specifically, I'm looking for performance feedback at wide apertures for portraiture.

I've been looking at that one as well... how's the IQ at 2.8?

As far as the Sigma 70 to 200mm f.2,8, I was interested in that as well until I discovered that the Tamron 70 to 200mm f.2.8 tested out much better by Popular Photography. Specifically the Sigma went down to GOOD IQ at the 200mm end, while the Tamron stayed at EXCELLENT IQ throughout.

Hi. Just joined the forum and thought I would take this opportunity to give my recommendation for a good zoom lens.

I have a Nikon D50. I will be moving to the D300 by year's end. I recently (July 08) purchased the Tamron 28-300 (VC) F1:3.5-6.3 XR Di and added a Rodenstock Digtal UV Filter.

This is a very nice lens, that for me has replace both of the kit lenses that came with the D50. Focus is smooth, but can be a little slow at times due to the Vibration Compensation motor. I had an opportunity to use a D300 a few months ago with this lens and it was wonderful.

I also have the Tamron 90 F2.8 Di 1:1 Macro. Again, a very good lens.

thanks for the suggestions.... i ended up going with the expensive 24-70 2.8 nikor... ouch!!!... lotta dough.... but the lens is silly sharp at 2.8...

not sure what i'm doing on the 70-200 side yet.... i'm trying to buy for the future (like the next 10 years)... so I might just bite the bullet and grab the nikor 70-200 2.8 VR.... but I hear it will be reoptimized for full frame and VRII within the next year so I might try out a used Sigma 70-200 2.8 to fill the hole...
